Kyle Snyder (World Champion, NCAA Champion, OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST, 2018 AAU Sullivan Award Winner)

OHIO STATE WRESTLING TEAM'S SNYDER BROTHERS "LIKE BIG ORCA... AND LITTLE ORCA"

Athletic genes run in families. Ohio State Football has the Borens and Bosas, Buckeye Basketball had the Sullingers, and the WrestleBucks have the Stiebers and Jordans.

Add to that list the Synder Brothers, Kyle and Kevin. Senior Kyle, the reigning Olympic, World and NCAA champion, is practically a household name. Freshman brother Kevin, according to head coach Tom Ryan, is more or less a younger model of the greatest wrestler in the sport today.

Watching them in action together, he said, reminded him of the apex predators of the high seas, Orcinus orca.

"Watching Kevin, isn't it like watching, you've got Big Orca in Kyle, and you've got like Sea World, the Little Orca just swimming beside him," Ryan said after the Buckeyes hosted Kent State and Cleveland State in the annual Thanksgiving Throwdown. "[He] looks just like him, moves just like him."

Both Snyder brothers earned bonus point victories in the tri-dual meet, with Kyle earning his second consecutive victory by fall, earning the new and now coveted Pin Chain.

Wrestling: Kyle Snyder wins U.S. Male Olympic athlete of the year award

OSU senior Kyle Snyder peeks at the scoreboard while battling Kent State redshirt junior Devin Nye on November 21, 2017 in Columbus, OH.

Ohio State senior heavyweight wrestler Kyle Snyder was named U.S. Male Olympic Athlete of the Year Wednesday by the U.S. Olympic Committee at the 2017 Team USA Awards.

The crown jewel of Snyder’s year came in Paris at the World Wrestling Championships in August. He defeated Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia to win gold at 97kg while clinching a team championship for the U.S. The gold medal was his third in a row after winning an Olympic championship in 2016 and a world title in 2015.

He also won the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia and gold medals at the Pan American Championships and the Grand Prix of Spain. Other international accomplishments within the year for Snyder include winning the U.S. Senior Open and the U.S. World Team Trials while stateside.

Snyder returned to Columbus and Steelwood Training Facility on Thursday and reflected on the honor and the year that added to the resume of the Olympic gold medalist.

“It was a great honor,” Snyder said. “There were a lot of great nominees. It was really fun to be a part of the show and I’m just thankful that I was able to win the award and hopefully I can continue to represent Team USA and Ohio State at an elite level.”

Even though he’s just 22 years of age and still a college student, Snyder is viewed as a leader for his country by all Olympic athletes. He doesn’t find the responsibility to be daunting or weird. He likes it.

“I consider myself to be a leader,” Snyder said. “I think other people on the team do as well. Ever since I was a kid I liked being thought of as a team captain and leading by example.”

In a time where most people debate of the greatest between Brady/Manning, Lebron/Jordan and Saban/Bryant, a lot of people are not paying attention to one of the greatest if not greatest wrestlers in our lifetime in a sport that is overshadowed by a football and basketball. Still a young career but already so many accomplishments. Proud to call him a Buckeye!
Who you gonna debate against him?

USA wins the world duals in Carver, in big thanks to two Buckeyes. Logan Stieber pulled off an incredible victory against a 3x world champ to win 6-3. Little side note, man do I miss watching Logie Bear wrestle for the Bucks. He is just so explosive and a great kid...as much as I miss him in Columbus, I feel fortunate to get to watch him wrestle at this level.

And Kyle Snyder you say? Not really sure what to say, he is just dominant and at a level I have never watched. Kyle is so much better than everyone and tonight's match proved it. Reminded me of why I watched every single match he had here like it was his last...he is basically the Michael Jordan of wrestling, he will go down as the best wrestler in US history for the most recent generation. Glad I get to watch him internationally because man, I really am going to miss him wrestling in Columbus. Congrats on Kyle signing with Rudis btw, meant to give him a shout out.

He absolutely has to be mentioned in the same breath as Archie, Jesse Owens and Jack Nicklaus now. And he's only 22, he has at least another decade ahead of him in the sport if he so chooses.

I agree. Only the fourth Buckeye to win it after Mal Whitfield, Glenn Davis and Ezekial Elliott, though they didn't give it to African-Americans in the 30s can be the only explanation for Jesse Owens not winning it.
