Kiffin didn't do that bad with the Raiders.. he got the players to play every week, despite being an awful mix of talent, ego, and busts. He's a good recruiter. I think he'll do fine. I don't see him winning any titles, but I don't think he'll be awful.

If he DOES get Ed Orgeron to be on his coaching staff that'd be a big coup recruiting-wise for him. Orgeron was the one responsible for getting Lawrence Jackson, Sedrick Ellis, Jeff Schweiger, Keith Rivers and all them to USC.

This is a really smart hire by Tennessee-the guy can recruit, and he is getting a big time defensive staff w/ his dad and Ed Ogeron. I imagine a couple of the old Tennessee staff will be kept on for recruiting purposes as well. A lot of NFL guys do fairly well after returning to college just because they regain the control that made them succesful in college, but which they did not have in the NFL-they were dealing w/ 28 year old men, not teenagers and college kids. Kiffin did about as well as could be expected in Oakland, he simply had an insane boss.

Lane Kiffin has already been accused of committing a secondary recruiting violation by Steve Spurrier...sounds like sour grapes over losing an assistant to Lane.

Welcome to the SEC, cheater. Signed, Ol' Ball Coach. - Dr. Saturday - NCAA Football - Rivals.com

South Carolina?s Steve Spurrier questioned whether new Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin broke an NCAA rule when he called a recruit a day before he was introduced as the Volunteers? new coach.
According to a story published on VolQuest.com, part of the Rivals? network, Kiffin and former Gamecocks recruiting coordinator David Reaves called Tampa running back Jarvis Giles on Sunday and left him voice messages.
[...]
"You?re supposed to have passed the NCAA test and be on board, I think. But maybe he was just calling him as an interested observer," Spurrier said today, laughing. "I don?t know. But technically to be able to recruit you?re supposed to pass the NCAA test."

He seems to have the energy for the job. I've seen a couple of interviews and all he talks about is hitting the recruiting trail, evaluating players etc... If he is as good a salesman as advertised and can grab some talent away from the Florida schools, UGA, Nick Satan etc... he "might" have some success at Tennecheat. I look at him as much more of a name guy than a results guy. He was hired based purely on potential and what he "might" do, not what he has done.

This is his first real shot to be a head coach. I don't count Oakland because that is a complete mess and he had the Cryptkeeper, aka Al Davis, not just looking over his shoulder but standing on his freaking neck.

Geez, why do they all try to sound like Tressel now?

OK. Let's see. Calling a recruit before you are appointed...didn't that work out pretty good for DickRod? Oh, wait, yes, I see....

Those silly NCAA rules. Doesn't sound like anything more than Spurrier starting the In-your-head-Tennessee campaign early.

This isn't whining - it's just the OBC being the OBC. He was still poking fun at the Dawgs when he was in his 2nd year with the Redskins.

Nobody twists the knife on disappointing seasons better than the Evil Genius.

You can't spell 'unsubstantiated' without U-T.

I've got mixed feelings about this. On one hand - getting anything that improves UT hurts the Dawgs and that flat-out sucks.

On the other hand, Monte Kiffin leaving Tampa is a HUGE boost to the Falcons. I think Gruden's an average coach to begin with - this move oughta take him down a peg or two.
