Las Vegas Raiders (official thread)

Oakland won't give the Raiders money for a new stadium because it still owes $80 million on the old one

As the Oakland Raiders seemingly plot a move to Los Angeles, government officials in Oakland and Alameda County aren't willing to spend millions in taxpayer money on a new stadium that would keep the team in town.

Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf said she wouldn't support using public funds on a proposed $900 million stadium that currently faces a $400 million funding gap, according to Rachel Swan of the San Francisco Chronicle.

And why not?

Aside from the obvious, well-documented issues with spending public money on sports stadiums, the city and the county are still paying off the publicly funded stadium renovations that originally brought the team back to Oakland in 1995.

According to Swan, Oakland and Alameda County "still have to pay an outstanding balance of $80 million in bonds" related to the O.co Coliseum project, and they'll be paying it off until 2026.

Proposed Los Angeles Stadium Would Feature An Al Davis Eternal Flame

The Carson (Calif.) City Council rammed through approval for a $1.7 billion, two-team NFL stadium, despite not having finalized any NFL teams, or any details on how the stadium might be paid for. But at least there are now some pretty drawings of what the stadium might look like.

Report: Proposed Carson NFL stadium won't have eternal flame for Al Davis

350x-1129-e1348265695949.jpg

Consider the idea extinguished.

The proposed NFL stadium in Carson, Calif., which could be shared by the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers, was originally going to include an eternal flame honoring late Raiders owner Al Davis.

But according to Sports Business Journal, current Raiders owner (and Al's son) Mark Davis agreed to remove the tribute idea as, reported by SBJ, "many in the league ... were not pleased" by the decision.

The boisterous Al Davis, who served as the principal owner and general manager for the Raiders from 1972-2011, ruffled some (or many) feathers during his checkered tenure, especially for his habit of suing the NFL.

The Raiders, Chargers and St. Louis Rams (potenially, in Inglewood) could all be playing in the Los Angeles area in the near future.

Kind of looks like in 3 or 4 years it will be the LA Raiders with no "Al Davis eternal flame" in their new Carson CA stadium.

What's in a Nickname? The Origins of All 32 NFL Team Names

Chet Soda, Oakland’s first general manager, sponsored a name-the-team contest in 1960. Helen A. Davis, an Oakland policewoman, submitted the winning entry, Señors, and was rewarded with a trip to the Bahamas. The nickname, an allusion to the old Spanish settlers of northern California, was ridiculed in the weeks that followed, and fans also claimed that the contest was fixed. Scotty Stirling, a sportswriter for the Oakland Tribune who would later become the team’s general manager, provided another reason to abandon the nickname. “That’s no good,” Stirling said. “We don’t have the accent mark for the n in our headline type.” Responding to the backlash, Soda and the team’s other investors decided to change the team’s nickname to Raiders, which was a finalist in the contest along with Lakers.

10 Ways To Make Oakland Raiders Fans Mad

1. Claim That BALCO Got Them To The Super Bowl
bill-romanowksi.jpg

The last time Oakland made it to the Super Bowl was at the end of the 2002 season. Coincidentally, the BALCO drug scandal was discovered and blown open in the summer of 2003. Bill Romanowski was involved with BALCO dating back to 1996 and he was with the Raiders for that final good season. The Raiders went 4-12 in 2003 and haven't had a winning record since. That will ruffle some feathers.

2. Ridicule The Coliseum's Nickname of The Black Hole
raiders-copy1.jpg

The O.co or Overstock.com Coliseum (which is a joke in its own right) is commonly referred to as 'The Black Hole' by Raiders fans. Suggest that it's not called The Black Hole because of the team's colors or to strike fear into the hearts of other teams -- it's actually referring to a toilet bowl due to the building's history of sewage backup problems.

3. Ask Who Will Be Head Coach For The 2016-2017 Season
Raiders2.jpg

Oakland just brought in Jack Del Rio to be their head coach starting this season. He will be the 7th head coach in the last 12 seasons. His odds are just as good as anybody else's to stay on more than a few years, but the Raiders' track record with coaches speaks for itself. Might as well start preparing now to start complaining about someone new after this season.

This will be an absolute nightmare. Interstate 15 will need to be expanded, as it already needs to, to support ALL the California traffic that this will add to the already mass amounts of Californian traffic that comes through on the weekends and also holidays. It will bring a lot of crime, but also a shit ton of money. I15 though, seriously will need to be expanded to 3-4 lanes all the way from town to LA.

Raiders owner Mark Davis says he wants to move team to Las Vegas

Raiders owner Mark Davis says he wants to move the team to Las Vegas and is willing to spend a half-billion dollars as part of a deal for a new stadium in the city.

Davis upped the ante in a bid to move the team to this gambling city, appearing Thursday alongside soccer great David Beckham and billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson before a committee studying the idea of a $1.4 billion stadium.

If the Raiders move to Las Vegas, Oakland and Alameda County taxpayers are left "holding the bag" (i.e. a $95M debt).

As Raiders look to Las Vegas, Coliseum debt hangs over East Bay

Whatever the case, “If the Raiders go to Las Vegas, we will still owe the $95 million,” Coliseum Executive Director Scott McKibben said.

“But if they stay here, there is a way in which to generate new money to pay down the bond indebtedness,” he said.

The question is, can a deal be crafted that works economically — and, at the same time, be sold to a skeptical voting public that is still paying $20 million a year in tax money from the last stadium deal that brought the Raiders back to Oakland from Los Angeles.

Due to the sensitive nature of the current talks, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf is keeping mum.

In the past, however, Schaaf has made it clear that Oakland’s share of the old debt has resulted in $10 million a year less for cops, firefighters and other city services — and that the debt continues to be the shadow that hangs over any future deal.

Just saying': If a city/county/state is going to have "public funding" of a stadium, they should (at least) get a contractual agreement from the team that will use the stadium to stay in the stadium (at least) until the public debt is all paid off.

Raiders owner says Vegas stadium is team's new home after funding passes

Six months ago, Raiders owner Mark Davis promised that he would move his team to Las Vegas if the state of Nevada approved $750 million in public funds for a new stadium.

Well, we've got some bad news for you Oakland: The funding was officially approved on Friday.

The Nevada Assembly approved the funding bill with a 28-13 vote during a meeting in Carson City. The vote comes two days after the money was formally approved with a 16-5 vote in the Nevada Senate. The senate actually had to vote on the bill twice. The second time around, they had to approve the amendments made by the assembly.
