"The Greatest Showman"

Now I'm not going to recommend this movie to everyone, particularly not the key 18-49 male demographic here at BP, but seeing this one the big screen with my girls was a lot of fun. I'm a sucker for a big old-fashioned showbiz spectacle, and really enjoyed the whole cast (Bearded Lady!) and all the song-and-dance numbers, which the girls have been singing all week.

Even just in terms of box office, this is a fascinating case study, as it set a record for biggest 2nd week increase, which (might have to do with the holidays but also) means it was a big word-of-mouth mover. And then on Rotten Tomatoes, it's got a meh 55% from critics on the Tomatometer, compared to a 90% audience score, which suggests people who are looking for a fun time at the movies are finding it here.

Well, it's old, so it's on TV, but it's a movie. Far as I can tell, it's a hybrid fantasy-satire, called Draft Day.

Kevin Costner in a tale about the Cleveland Browns trying to figure out a QB draft pick. Seems that if they can just get it right, it will make their franchise. Fantasy. Satire.

"A Futile and Stupid Gesture" popped up on Netflix last week, and I watched it without knowing a single thing about it, and was pleasantly surprised. Will Forte plays the founder of National Lampoon's magazine/movie empire, and it's got a bunch of current comedy talent playing the greats from their early heyday, including Joel McHale doing solid work as Chevy Chase. Interesting bio story, lots of laughs, also boobs.

Arrival (free on prime video)

Great feel for a sci Fi flick. Anyone looking for Michael bay empty sizzle should steer clear, this is a much slower, emotional installment. Terrific performance by Amy Adams.

Not on par with interstellar but a worthy addition to the genre nonetheless.

Watched Justice League last night. Went in thinking it was going to be garbage like BvS, but it wasn't that bad. It's no Avengers, but I probably enjoyed it more than any of the other DC movies bad CGI aside. I'll go the oposite way from all the DC fanboys. Can I get a Whedon cut of the movie? I'm pretty sure they should have cut Snyder off after MoS rather than giving him the keys to the kingdom. As an MCU fanboy I am very thankful for Kevin Feige running the show.

Black Panther - Stellar. If it were merely a blockbuster without a message, it's visuals and action would be very profitable. Those all take a major backseat to the depth of characters, social commentary and emotion of the film. Michael B Jordan is superb and arguably the best villain in the entire MCU (Loki probably outranks him, but in a single film it's close).

A few highlighted rotten tomatoes editor snippets
Whether or not this is the best film Marvel Studios has made to date-and it is clearly in the discussion-it is by far the most thought-provoking.
Ultimately, it's more interesting to think about than it is to watch.
The identity politics provide a fresh spin to the genre's increasingly tedious narrative formula.
p.s. Watched this at the Fun Barn near Athens. What a bargain. $4 tickets (anytime). Incredibly cheap food ($1-3 popcorn, $2.50 milkshakes, $2-3 burgers, etc), and a big arcade with reasonably priced games. The non 3d screen was old school (including the angle of the floor), but if I lived closer to there I might actually go to the movies more regularly. We dropped $20 at the arcade, ate 5 food items and saw a movie for $40 or less. If you get 2-3 food items at a Cbus theater, you're pushing $50-60 with no $20 arcade fun added in.

Just missed out on my top 5 of MCU movies. Have it 6th. I enjoyed it very much, and Killmonger was definitely fantastic as he was easy to relate to and could feel a little sorry for him
It's the top rated one on Rotten Tomatoes. I think I'll always be partial to Ironman 1 with Iron Soldier not far behind. Haven't seen Thor Ragnarok or Spidey Homecoming yet.

Killmonger was such an authentic villain and also so realistic (compared to the outlandish threats that comic books usually produce to be worthy challengers of superheroes).
