Lawrence Phillips didn't want to say he was angry. Speaking to the jury during his 2006 trial, Phillips explained how the theft of his last $97 during a pick-up football game made him feel.
"No, not really angry, I'd say I was upset," Phillips said in response to the questioning of the prosecutor, according to court documents.
He had been a star running back at Baldwin Park High School and the University of Nebraska. His short-lived NFL career started with great promise when he was drafted by the St. Louis Rams with the sixth overall pick in the 1996 draft.
Now facing a jury, he was trying to explain how he ended up running a stolen car into several young men after a barefoot, shirtless game of tackle football at a park next to the Coliseum, USC's football stadium.
He told the jury that he drove a car up to the young men on the field to "get their attention," and that he only ran into them after swerving to get out of the way of a bicycle that one of them pushed at the car.
But the jury sided with the prosecutor's story that Phillips had sped around the field trying to drive over everyone he played against in the football game.

Phillips faces up to 25 years in prison

SAN DIEGO -- Former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips was convicted of assault and other felony charges Tuesday in San Diego.
Superior Court jury took less than a day to find Phillips guilty of seven counts, including assault with great bodily injury; false imprisonment; making a criminal threat; and auto theft. He had been accused of choking his girlfriend on two occasions in August 2005, once into unconsciousness.
He faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced Sept. 8. Phillips already is serving a 10-year sentence for hitting three teenagers with his car in August 2005, when he drove onto a field in Los Angeles.
Phillips has refused to attend his own trial, and was not in the courtroom when the verdicts were read Tuesday.
Deputy District Attorney Nicole Cooper told the San Diego Union-Tribune the girlfriend testified she and Phillips had argued on Aug. 2, 2005, and he started choking her after she began tossing his clothes to the floor.
"He'd never been like that before," the girlfriend testified, according to KGTV in San Diego. "He was always a sweetheart."
In the second incident, on Aug. 13, Phillips accused the girlfriend of cheating on him, according to the Union-Tribune. He knocked her backward into a bathtub, then drove with her to find the man with whom he believed she was cheating, the newspaper reported.
KGTV reported on its Web site that the girlfriend testified she and Phillips are still in a relationship.

While Eddie is the shit at RB. I do want to say that if LP had half a f**king brain then his potential was through the roof. Ray Lewis still says that he is the most talented player he has ever played against. LP was a physical freak.

Though Eddie was the complete package on the field and off.

SAN DIEGO -- Ex-NFL running back Lawrence Phillips has been sentenced to more than 31 years in prison for attacking his girlfriend and driving his car into three teens.

Phillips, 34, was sentenced Friday in San Diego for assault and other crimes.

Phillips told the judge he didn't get a fair trail and he'll appeal.

Phillips twice choked his girlfriend in 2005 in San Diego. Later that year, he aimed his car and struck three teens after a pickup football game in Los Angeles.

A Los Angeles judge gave him 10 years for that attack but he was re-sentenced to seven years on Friday.

Phillips was once one of the nation's top college football players at Nebraska. The St. Louis Rams released him for insubordination in 1997. He also play for the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips, who was wanted by police for domestic violence, was arrested Sunday after allegedly running his car into three teenagers who argued with him during a pickup football game, police said.

Phillips was charged with suspicion of attempted murder and domestic abuse and held without bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Web site.

Police had been seeking the 30-year-old Phillips since earlier this month for allegedly attacking his girlfriend twice, once choking her into unconsciousness.

Phillips joined a group of 16- and 17-year-olds in a pickup football game in Exposition Park on Sunday and got into an argument with several of the teens, said Los Angeles police officer Sandra Escalante. He left the park, but returned and drove a black Honda onto the field, allegedly running into three teenage boys, she said.

The teenagers were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The car Phillips was driving was reported stolen in San Diego earlier in the week, Escalante said.

Phillips was arrested and held on the domestic violence felony warrant. Charges are pending in the Sunday incident, she said.

San Diego Police had offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to Phillips' whereabouts, and said he had indicated he wouldn't surrender peacefully.

The first domestic assault, in which police say Phillips' 28-year-old girlfriend was choked, allegedly occurred Aug. 2 at her San Diego home. Police said the second assault allegedly took place 11 days later when Phillips confronted the woman at a party.

In both cases he left the scene before officers could arrest him.

Police have said Phillips is also wanted on an outstanding felony warrant from Los Angeles for an unrelated domestic violence case.

The former University of Nebraska star has a history of high-profile trouble with the law going back a decade to his time as one of the nation's top college football players.

He was drafted sixth overall in 1996 by the St. Louis Rams despite pleading no contest to a charge of domestic violence in a confrontation with a girlfriend. He was released for insubordination in 1997 after 25 games with the Rams.

Phillips signed with the Miami Dolphins later in the 1997 season, but was released after pleading no contest to hitting a woman in a nightclub.

He was the top offensive player in NFL Europe in 1999 after setting league records for rushing and touchdowns with the Barcelona Dragons.

He signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 1999, but was released for missing a practice. He later played in the Canadian Football League.
