LB Anthony Schlegel (Boar Hunter)

Congrats to Anthony and his wife on the birth of their son.

ozone

It's a boy! According to Bobby Carpenter, Anthony Schlegel and his wife Stephanie had a baby boy last week. Carpenter flew to Dallas were the Schlegels are currently residing to be with Anthony for the event. The boy has been named Hunter Lee Schlegel, and it is no coincidence that he is named Hunter and that his father is a dyed-in-the-wool hunting enthusiast.
Great news. First the Boar Hunter, now the Born Hunter!

Here's hoping we made an offer-in-utero. NCAA's okay with that, right? :)

Tough marker

Third-round rookie linebacker Anthony Schlegel has had a low-key training camp playing on the second defense behind Jonathan Vilma and Eric Barton as the first defense's 3-4 inside 'backers.

But the Ohio Stater may have started to make a statement with a strong Giants Stadium scrimmage Sunday. His biggest plays: dropping Cedric Houston for no gain on a screen, then rushing Patrick Ramsey into a desperate backpedal and a throwaway, which he swatted backward.

"My dad [Roger] always gave me a grade after games, and he was really tough – he coached 30 years," Schlegel said. "But I just have to go back and watch the film. There definitely were some positive things, but there's always going to be something I messed up on."

Jets | Mangini discusses Schlegel's problems in pass coverage
Thu, 24 Aug 2006 01:58:08 -0700

During his press conference, New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini discussed LB Anthony Schlegel's problems in pass coverage. "Its one of those things where sometimes you call a play and you're hoping it will be one match up and they call a formation and it becomes another match up. You have to be able to handle those match ups when they come up. There were times when other guys with 'stiff hips' have covered and played with better technique then Anthony did on that wheel route. The important thing is for him to look at that and understand where he made the mistake, which is something that we covered, so the next time if it does happen just really play to his strengths and understand how he has to play that more specifically and that will help him."

JETS CONFIDENTIAL

Wednesday, November 29, 2006BY DAVE HUTCHINSON
Star-Ledger Staff
Rookie finally gets a chance to shine
It took 11 games but there was finally an Anthony Schlegel sighting last Sunday against the Houston Texans -- and what a sighting it was.
Schlegel, a third-round pick out of Ohio State who had been deactivated for the first nine games, absolutely annihilated Texans kickoff returner Dexter Wynn with a highlight-reel hit.
"It was fun," said Schlegel, an inside linebacker. "Football is fun. I was fortunate that everybody did their job and I was in the right place at the right time."
The drafting of Schlegel in the third round appears to be the only mistake made by new general manager Mike Tannenbaum in the April draft. At the time, many draft experts felt the pick was a "reach," meaning the player didn't deserve to be picked that high (76th overall).
Most third-round picks play immediately, at least on special teams, and when Schlegel couldn't crack the special teams lineup, the experts appeared to be right. The Jets liked Schlegel's intangibles -- team captain at Air Force before transferring to Ohio State, where he was also a team captain -- but those intangibles weren't enough to get him on the field.
Worse still, the Jets cut second-year linebacker Ryan Myers early in the season and signed linebackers Ryan Riddle and Cody Spencer off the street -- and both played over Schlegel.
Undaunted, Schlegel continued to work hard and is now carving himself a niche on special teams. On Sunday in Green Bay, he'll see his pal, Packers rookie linebacker A.J. Hawk, taken fifth overall. Another Ohio State linebacker, Bobby Carpenter, was a first-round pick by the Cowboys last April.
The knock on Schlegel is that he's slow, has poor lateral movement and is a liability in pass coverage. The Jets, however, still feel the 6-1, 251-pounder is a good fit in their 3-4 defense because he's tough and smart.
"It's just going out there and doing your job," said Schlegel, who used to hunt wild boar. "When you get the opportunity to make a play, you have to made a play. ... I've just tried to show the coaches I've been improving, that I belong and can contribute."

Was this Schlegel's last hurrah as a Jet?

By Gregg Hayim

Posted Aug 31, 2007

For 2006 third-round selection, linebacker Anthony Schlegel, things have not gone exactly according to plan.

Schlegel, one of the hardest hitters on the team, spent the majority of the summer running with the third-team defense. With a lack of opportunity to prove his worth, Schlegel has found himself on the bubble for a roster spot.
Finally given the opportunity to show his wares, Schlegel did not disappoint. The Ohio State alum played a key role in the Jets 13-11 come-from-behind victory against the Eagles, last night in Philadelphia. He led the team with seven tackles, including four solo and a forced fumble.

"This was my one opportunity all camp to go out there and show what I can do" Schlegel said from his locker after the game. "I wasn't worried about anything, I just know what type of player I am and if someone gives me an opportunity, I'll give them everything I have."

Bengals make more moves

The Bengals this afternoon waived three players -- cornerback Blue Adams, rookie offensive lineman Dan Santucci and tailback Quincy Wilson -- and signed three players off waivers.

The teams signed cornerback David Jones (Saints), tailback Clifton Dawson (Colts) and linebacker Anthony Schlegel (Jets).

Jones is a rookie from Wingate and was the Saints fifth-round pick in the 2007 draft. Dawson was a rookie free agent from Harvard signed by the Colts in the spring. And Schlegel was a third-round Jets draft pick from Ohio State in 2006. He played in four games as a rookie with New York and had one special teams tackle.

Bengals add ex-OSU linebacker Schlegel

Arrival from Jets means Muncy is 'the odd man out,' gets left off of Cincy's practice squad.

CINCINNATI ? Anthony Schlegel is proof that one team's trash is another team's treasure.
The Bengals grabbed the former Ohio State star off waivers from the New York Jets on Sunday because he knows all three linebacker positions and will contribute in kick coverage on special teams.

Schlegel, a third-round draft pick in 2006, joins a pair of rookies ? cornerback David Jones and tailback Clifton Dawson ? as the newest Bengals.
