LB Austin Spitler (official thread)

Here I come to throw water on the fire again, but I hate late offers, especially instate. It tells me the staff is not that confident about our chances OOS and are going to the second option. If Im sure of one thing, its that the staff has Ohio pretty well scouted for talent. Hence, if he was our first option, why is he now getting an offer after the entire season is now over?

Also - if one more person denotes AJ Hawk as a "reach" or a "sleeper", Im going to go nuts. The fact of the matter is AJ was the bluest of blue chips who was arguably a top 10 player in Ohio during one of the best years ever for the state. Just because he was in a numbers game in the best year ever for LBs in Ohio with DAndrea and Carpenter does not limit his status or talent. In 4 out of every 5 years he would likely have been the best LB propect in Ohio. Hardly a "sleeper".

If one more person denotes AJ Hawk isn't a valid argument as to why you shouldn't whine about certain kids getting offered I'm gonna go nuts.
Just a guess, but probably more baseless and incoherent posts like this.......

Edit -

Just saw that Spitler benched 225 21 times at Nike. Quite impressive. Still curious why we offered so late though.

I agree with you in that Hawk & Spitler are different situations. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Hawk was offered directly after his camp performance at OSU in front of the coaches. If Hawk had been to camp and was then offered at late as November, it would be a completely different story. Hawk was a surprise in that he was rated as a 3 star and at the bottom half of the OSU recruiting class that year.

That being said, I can't imagine that the OSU staff doesn't have good reason to make the offer even this late in the game when injuries/academics have nothing to do with the delayed offer. He could be a sleeper.

I watched him play my old high school and he looked great to me. The SWBL is probably about as good a competition for DIII/IV as any league in the state. One of my old high school coaches thought he was one of the best defensive players to come out of the league since Thomas Howard.
