LB Baron Browning (Denver Broncos)

Pretty insane watching Baron play this year. His diagnosis of the play, pursuit, and violence have really been showing (all while maintaining strong gap integrity). Looks like a completely different player and I couldn't be more happily surprised. Tuf is solid but based on what I've been seeing, id probably expect Baron to take the majority of the reps going forward.

Couldn't have said it any better, Baron looks like a different player in his first two games. Couldn't be more happy with his progression.

NEBRASKA NOTEBOOK: JEFF OKUDAH MAKES TWO INTERCEPTIONS, BARON BROWNING HAS CAREER GAME, JOSHUA ALABI FILLS IN AT RIGHT TACKLE AND J.K. DOBBINS CLIMBS OHIO STATE'S ALL-TIME RUSHING LIST

BROWNING MAKES HIS PRESENCE FELT

Baron Browning isn’t Ohio State’s starting middle linebacker yet, but the way he played against Nebraska on Saturday night is going to make it increasingly difficult to keep him off the field.

While rotating in and out of the lineup with Tuf Borland in Saturday’s game, Browning consistently made his presence felt when he was on the field, recording seven total tackles – tied with Malik Harrison for the team lead against the Cornhuskers, and his most in a single game in his career to date – including two tackles for loss.

After two underwhelming seasons to start his Ohio State career, Browning has consistently flashed this season with his explosive speed to the ball and powerful tackling, showing why he was ranked as the top linebacker in the recruiting class of 2017.

“I look at all of our guys that are getting better every week, and Baron is another one,” co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison said after the game. “He's a tremendously talented athlete, a great person, great character. And he just every day works as hard as he can and tries to do what he's supposed to do.”

Borland has started every game at middle linebacker so far this season, and the Buckeyes could be reluctant to take him out of the starting lineup, given that he is a second-year captain and regarded as one of the team’s best leaders. Browning has cut into Borland’s playing time significantly, though, and made more plays when he has been on the field, which ensures that he will continue to see plenty of snaps regardless of who takes the first snaps going forward.

Noticeably, Borland was the only starter still on the field at the beginning of Ohio State’s final defensive series of the game in the fourth quarter, though Browning also saw playing time on that series.

What a different new DCs (Hafley & Mattison) and/or linebacker coach (Washington) makes.......

I'd say ditto for Werner. He took a lot of s*** from Buckeye Nation last year, but, probably due to the coaching regime change, he's lighting it up this year. He did get beaten a few times against MSU in coverage, but he always seems to be around the ball, and making sure tackles. Would like to see some of the young 'uns get some time at LB. Surprised that some of the 5*'s that were waiting to see how the LBs developed this year (naturally) haven't been calling wanting to be re-recruited...….or maybe they have? Go Bucks!

Naw, we've got a great Rushman package made up of some pretty stout DL guys. Leave him on the edge, where he can take an unopposed route straight to the QB (as he did against Lewerke). And if they keep an OT to 'spy' on The Baron, then that leaves a more manageable 5 (OL) vs our 4DL with faster guys inside. Win-Win for the good guys. Go Bucks! PS, yeah, he was screaming to the QB, yes? Go Bucks!

...

He arrived at Ohio State as a key member of the nation’s No. 2 recruiting class. Two years in, he had not cracked the linebacker rotation enough to fulfill those expectations. While Browning started three games as a sophomore, he remained the clear second option to Borland.

Browning admits he struggled to find the singular focus necessary to excel in football. He did not go into specifics, but he said distractions back home and his own lack of priorities were both factors.

However, he also said he felt abandoned by someone at Ohio State. Browning declined to name any individuals, and admits some complicity in the breakdown of the relationship. Regardless, the episode contributed to his diminished role.

“One person who I didn’t expect to give up on me gave up on me, and it just didn’t sit well with me,” he said. “So then at that point, the relationship is ended. Every time you see one another, it just wasn’t what it needed to be, or the relationship it once was.”

Browning’s feelings of isolation began to change in the offseason when, after Urban Meyer’s departure, the defensive coaching staff saw wholesale changes. Jeff Hafley and Greg Mattison came on as co-defensive coordinators and implemented a scheme which Buckeye defenders say is less complicated and allows them to play looser and swarm to the ball.

The biggest influence came with the addition of linebackers coach Al Washington. A Columbus native and Buckeye legacy who most recently coached linebackers at Michigan, Washington and Browning clicked from their initial meeting. Soon, Browning became close with Washington’s family. The coach began recommending motivational books such as “Can’t Hurt Me” by retired Navy Seal David Goggins.

Cont'd ...

Would be concerning on it's own, but when Arnette has said the same thing, and he was in a different room under a different position coach...

Not close enough to the situation to be sure of anything, but this sounds to me like a coach that was dealing with severe depression, which would explain a lot.

Either way, definitely falls under the "makes you go 'hmmm'" heading.

Well, that would explain it. Browning has looked like the player we though he'd be and more this season. Aside from Young and Okudah, I think he's looked like most impressive player on our defense this year. Harrison has looked great too, but Browning is really standing out to me each game.
