Patriots Sign Free Agent LB Bobby Carpenter
By New England Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots announced the signing of free agent linebacker Bobby Carpenter. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Carpenter, 28, is a veteran of six NFL seasons with Dallas (2006-09), Miami (2010) and Detroit (2010-11). The 6-2, 249-pounder was originally drafted in the first round (18th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft by Dallas out of Ohio State. He has played in 89 NFL games with 10 starts and has accumulated 165 total tackles, one interception that he returned for a touchdown, 3.5 sacks, five passes defensed and one fumble recovery.

After four seasons with Dallas, Carpenter was traded by the Cowboys to the St. Louis Rams on May 10, 2010 for OT Alex Barron. He was released by the Rams prior to the start of the 2010 season and was signed by the Miami Dolphins. He played in five games with two starts for the Dolphins in 2010 before being cut and signing with the Detroit Lions, where he finished the 2010 season.

Last season, Carpenter played in 16 games with three starts for the Lions and recorded 29 total tackles and his first career interception at Dallas on Oct. 2 and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown.

2 Buckeyes this offseason... :)

My jersey choices have doubled if they make the squad.

Bobby was by far his best at tOSU when they just turned him loose and let him rush the passer. No one has done that yet in the NFL. I've always felt he is a situational player, but with the right scheme and coach that he could be effective. Hope this works out, as I think the Pats run the best scheme (and have the best coach) for Bobby to succeed.

Since we got Dont'a Hightower in the draft, and currently have Brandon Spikes, Dane Fletcher, Jared Mayo, Rob Ninkovich, what is going to happen to Bobby Carpenter? We added him via free agency but with drafting Hightower, I don't see him getting very much playing time at all, if at all.

As I just mentioned above, Ninko is an OLB, so you can remove him from the discussion of inside guys. But your question is still valid. Carpenter faces an uphill battle to make the roster, for sure. Now, unless Carpenter blows everyone away once the pads are on in training camp, his best chance, it would seem, would be to compete with Fletcher, but even then, the latter has the edge. I?m interested, though, to see what, if anything, Carpenter can bring to this defense.

LB Bobby Carpenter continues to be a fixture in different packages. Dont?a Hightower got into the DL mix on a few snaps but is mostly an interior linebacker.

Seeing a lot of linebacker Bobby Carpenter on the field. He's mostly playing off the line, where his athleticism shows up in space.

Bobby Carpenter looking for a home with Patriots

A first-round pick in 2006, Bobby Carpenter said ??it?s been easy to get acclimated?? in Foxborough.
Jonathan Wiggs/Globe Staff

FOXBOROUGH - Bobby Carpenter had seen Bill Belichick?s press conferences. He was friendly with a few Patriots players. He watched some of their games on television.

But that was about all Carpenter knew about the team he signed with in April.

Carpenter has zig-zagged across the country throughout his NFL career. Dallas made him the 16th overall pick in 2006 out of Ohio State. St. Louis traded for him in 2010, then cut him four months later. A stint with Miami lasted 42 days. He lasted longer with Detroit, nearly two full seasons.

Now, in New England, Carpenter is one of 11 linebackers.

?It?s been exciting,?? Carpenter said Thursday, after Belichick canceled the Patriots? final minicamp practice. ?We have a great team atmosphere. I was very pleased with how great the locker room was. We?ve got a tremendous group of players here. Not only that, they?re great people, so it?s been easy to get acclimated.??

Carpenter, 28, immediately found a familiar face in linebackers coach Pepper Johnson. Johnson?s son Dionte was Carpenter?s teammate with the Buckeyes, and Pepper Johnson is a 1986 Ohio State graduate who won two Super Bowls with the Giants.

?He?s done a great job parlaying that, helping coach guys in a manner that really pertains to being on the field,?? Carpenter said. ?Very few coaches were as successful players as he was, so I think he brings a unique aspect to that environment of coaching.??

Bobby Carpenter hopeful his versatility helps
By Rich Thompson
Friday, June 15, 2012

FOXBORO — Outside linebacker Bobby Carpenter came to the Patriots [team stats] with a Buckeye connection to the coaching staff.

Carpenter played his college football at Ohio State with Dionte Johnson, son of linebackers coach Pepper Johnson. The elder Johnson played 13 NFL seasons and participated in two Super Bowls with the New York Giants under head coach Bill Parcells and defensive assistant Bill Belichick.

“Pep’s been great, he’s a high-stakes guy and I have a little bit of a relationship (because) I played with his son,” said Carpenter, who was in good spirits yesterday after Belichick abruptly terminated the final day of minicamp. “He was a tremendous player and he’s doing a great job parlaying that into helping to coach guys in a way and in a manner that really pertains to being on the field.

“Very few coaches were as successful as players as he was so I think he brings a unique aspect to that environment. I’ve met Pep a couple of times, he’s a great guy an a very charismatic individual and easy to get along with.”

Carpenter was part of Belichick’s offseason attempt to bolster the Patriots linebacker group behind returning starters Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes and Rob Ninkovich.

The 6-foot-2, 249-pound Carpenter is a seventh-year pro who’s made his bones on special teams. He began his NFL tenure with the Cowboys and split the 2010 season with the Dolphins and Lions, with whom he started three of 15 games and made 24 solo tackles last season. His lone interception was a 34-yard pick-six in a win at Dallas

Carpenter has useful tools

One player who received a lot of playing time during the offseason practices for the Patriots was former Cowboys, Dolphins, and Lions linebacker Bobby Carpenter. It didn?t hurt his cause that Brandon Spikes has been out since having offseason knee surgery, but they don?t play the same position. Spikes is a middle linebacker for the Patriots, while Carpenter can play both outside spots in a 4-3. Jerod Mayo is the weak-side linebacker, so that means Carpenter is in the mix on the strong side. Expect first-round pick Dont?a Hightower to have a say in that at some point. At the least, Carpenter is going to play a large role in coverage. He?s the only legitimate cover linebacker the Patriots have after Gary Guyton departed. Since Carpenter is destined for a large role with New England, I talked to an AFC personnel executive who knows him well. ?His best fit is with a 4-3 scheme,? said the executive. ?In a 3-4, he?s a tweener because he?s not an outside backer and he has to be on the weak side on the inside. In a 4-3, he can be a Sam or a Will. He?s really a backup player. Where there?s some value, he can give you a little bit of coverage, he can play on special teams, he can do some of the nickel work for you in terms of coverage. Above-average cover guy. For a big man, he runs pretty good. Above-average speed. Not a pass rusher. Where he?s best is when he?s covered up [behind a defensive lineman] and he doesn?t have to play strategically downhill and thump. When he can play sideline to sideline, that will play a little bit more to his skill set. He is not very physical. He is not very tough. He?s a little bit more of a lateral player. Not bad in space. Solid backup. He certainly looks the part. Good kid. Will work, practice and do all those things you ask.?

LANCASTER -- You can forgive former Lancaster and Ohio State standout Bobby Carpenter if he's feeling more patriotic this week.

The offseason has been a busy one for NFL free agents and with the six-year veteran signing a new contract with the New England Patriots, one of the league's best teams, he's got plenty of reasons to celebrate during the holiday.

"It's a great opportunity to get a chance to play on a winning football team and for an organization that has done so well over the last decade," Carpenter said.

The linebacker played the past season and a half with the Detroit Lions, the most recent of which ended in the playoffs, a common destination for the Patriots in recent years.

"Each season is different," he said. "Rosters turn over a lot, but the expectations in New England are always high."

Carpenter, who started his career with Dallas, also has played for the Miami Dolphins. He had other teams interested in his services, but ultimately it was New England and the success it's had under coach Bill Belichick that was a determining factor.

"A few other teams were interested, but New England was the team that showed the most interest and coach Belichick is one of the best coaches in football," he said. "I'm excited to have to opportunity to play there."

On the bubble: It?s become clear that Belichick really likes Bobby Carpenter, who got a good amount of playing time during organized team activities and minicamp. Then, Belichick heavily praised Carpenter for his versatility and football knowledge. But how much room is left on the roster? If Carpenter makes the team, that could spell the end for Jeff Tarpinian or Tracy White. Tarpinian still has practice squad eligibility, but the Patriots could lose him through waivers. It would be surprising if they cut White, who played through a sports hernia last season and has been a valuable special teamer. Those three might be competing for one or two jobs.
