LB Bobby Carpenter (All B1G, National Champion)

Bubble Watch: Bobby Carpenter
July, 18, 2012
By Mike Rodak | ESPNBoston.com

NAME: Bobby Carpenter

AGE: 28

2011 STATS: 16 games (3 starts), 29 total tackles, 1 interception, 1 pass defensed -- with Lions

INJURY STATUS: No known injuries

CHANCE OF MAKING 53-MAN ROSTER: 75%

WHY HE SHOULD MAKE IT: Carpenter could be slated for a more significant role in the defense than many expected when he was signed in April. In organized team activities, Carpenter saw the majority of his reps with the group of players expected to make up the core of the defense. The former first-round pick has bounced around teams in his six-year NFL career, but is considered a better than average coverage linebacker. This could earn Carpenter a role in sub packages.

WHY HE SHOULD NOT MAKE IT: The player who is most likely to push Carpenter for playing time on defense is 2012 first-round pick Dont'a Hightower. In the team's base defense, Hightower could eventually slide into a role as the strong-side linebacker. Carpenter saw reps at that spot in organized team activities, but over the long term, the team likely would prefer to use Hightower there, which would allow last season's "Sam," Rob Ninkovich, to shift back to defensive end. If Carpenter also cannot secure a role in sub packages over Hightower or another player, then he will have to fight for a job on special teams, where there is a wealth of competition.

CLOSEST COMPETITION: LB Tracy White, LB Jeff Tarpinian, LB Niko Koutouvides

Familiarity in special teams, coaching staff for Carpenter
July 31, 2012
By Alex Prewitt, Globe Correspondent

FOXBOROUGH -- With six seasons under his belt entering his first with the Patriots, Bobby Carpenter doesn't really feel like the new guy anymore.

In fact, he might be feeling a little old in a relatively young linebacking corps.

"There's a couple older guys," Carpenter said. "You know when you're getting old when you start counting the guys older than you rather than younger than you, because there's less of them and more of the younger guys."

The adjustments have been few and far between for Carpenter, a versatile linebacker who coach Bill Belichick has praised for how "comfortable" he looked doing different things.

?I think anytime you can play multiple positions you?re going to help yourself," Carpenter said. "They put a premium on that here, they try to work guys around, so hopefully that?s something they think I can still do and hopefully I can still do it. You?ll have to ask them.?

That versatility should serve him well in the special teams, where Carpenter has been seeing reps.

"They put a premium on that here as well," said Carpenter, noting that the position is nothing new to him. "Everybody is playing something, whether you?re playing 60 snaps on defense or 10, they want to make sure that guys are getting in there and playing special teams. So that?s something I?m excited about as well. [Scott O?Brien] is a great coach, so I?m looking forward to it.?

Of the familiar faces, linebackers coach Pepper Johnson's son, Dionte, played with Carpenter at Ohio State, and Carpenter himself is a former Buckeye.

?Pepper is a terrific coach, he knows his stuff and he?s a high intensity guy who relates well to players," Carpenter said. "From playing for 12 or 13 years in the NFL at such a high level, he obviously garners the respect of his players with anything he says. So you?re going to listen to him, he?s been there, he?s been in the fights, he knows what it?s all about and you?ve just got to take advantage of that.?

Bobby Carpenter looking to craft a new stage of his career with the Patriots 08.01.12
By Christopher Price

FOXBORO ? Bobby Carpenter has likely had a serious case of d?j? vu for the last week or so.

The son of the former Giants fullback can look around and spot a former Giants defensive coordinator (Bill Belichick), as well as two former New York linebackers (Pepper Johnson ? currently a Patriots? coach ? and Carl Banks, who was visiting New England?s practice on Tuesday afternoon).

The chance to be coached by someone like Johnson, who started his career with the Giants the year after his father left New York, is an honor for the former Ohio State product.

?Pepper is a terrific coach ? he knows his stuff and he?s a high intensity guy who relates well to players,? Carpenter said of Johnson. ?From playing for 12 or 13 years in the NFL at such a high level, he obviously garners the respect of his players with anything he says. So you?re going to listen to him, he?s been there, he?s been in the fights, he knows what it?s all about and you?ve just got to take advantage of that.?

Patriots Journal: Carpenter working his way around

FOXBORO ? As he does with so many of his players, Bill Belichick has been using linebacker Bobby Carpenter in a variety roles since Patriots? training camp began. In Carpenter?s case, showing the ability to handle different assignments could be the key to advancing his career.

Carpenter is a seven-year vet who has had something of a disappointing career thus far. He is a first-round draft choice by Dallas, but has been mostly a part-time player with the Cowboys, Dolphins and Lions. With Brandon Spikes out for the first few practices, Carpenter, who is hard to miss with his long, blond hair sticking out from under his helmet, has worked with the starting unit much of the time. He has worked at strong-side linebacker, in the middle and on special teams.

?I think Bobby picks things up well. He?s a smart guy,? Belichick said Wednesday before the team?s annual in-stadium practice for season ticket holders. ?I?m sure most of the things we?ve asked him to do he?s done before, but maybe it was called differently, or the terminology was different.

?But in terms of the techniques and being able to apply what he?s learned or done somewhere else to what we?re asking him to do, I?m sure they?re fairly closely related. And he adjusts easily. I don?t think that?s going to be a problem with him,? Belichick said.

Carpenter likes having so many assignments.

?I think anytime you can play multiple positions you?re going to help yourself,? he said. ?They put a premium on that here, they try to work guys around, so hopefully that?s something they think I can still do and hopefully I can still do it.?

Quick hits from Belichick
August, 1, 2012
By Mike Reiss | ESPNBoston.com

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- A few quick hits from Bill Belichick's news conference before tonight's practice:

Veteran linebacker Bobby Carpenter and picking up the system. "I think Bobby picks things up well. He's a smart guy. I'm sure most of the things we've asked him to do he's done before, but maybe it was called differently, or the terminology was different. Carpenter sounds like a Patriot

Carpenter ready to nail down a spot on Pats defense

The newcomer to Pats camp has already shown some skill and some aggressiveness as he looks to earn a spot in the team's linebacking core.

Bobby Carpenter is entering his first season with the Patriots. So what does he think?

"It's been an easy adjustment so far," said Carpenter. "We practice hard and every week I try to get better."

He certainly sounds like one of Bill Belichick's Patriots.

"This place is great. Wherever they choose to use me that's their prerogative."

Dont'a Hightower, Bobby Carpenter Likely to Take on Bigger Roles in Patriots Defense Given Loss of Dane Fletcher by Luke Hughes on Thu, Aug 9, 2012
Dane FletcherIt didn't take long for the Patriots to suffer their first major loss of the 2012 season. Not even three minutes had elapsed on the game clock in Gillette Stadium before Dane Fletcher became the unfortunate victim of what is reportedly a season-ending ACL tear.

The other option would likely be for free-agent addition and seven-year veteran Bobby Carpenter to take the reigns and make his own mark on the Patriots defense. The former first-round pick -- No. 18 by the Cowboys in 2006 -- has never quite lived up to the hype of his high draft stature, but Carpenter has established himself as a quality linebacker with the intelligence and instincts to help solidify a defense. He's played a decent amount of inside linebacker, although primarily in the 3-4 base package, and could translate those skills over to being a more permanent solution on the inside in New England. It should to be noted that Brandon Spikes, given his full health, will be the starter on the inside for the Patriots come Week 1. But where Fletcher was expected to excel for the Patriots, primarily as an additional interior presence and on special teams, the likes of Hightower, Carpenter and by the looks of Thursday night even Jeff Tarpinian (six tackles) could now be looked to as viable replacements.

Pats hope Bobby Carpenter has found perfect fit
Karen Guregian By Karen Guregian
Thursday, August 16, 2012

FOXBORO ? Bobby Carpenter carries the weight of being a first-round pick who was a big-time bust at his first stop in Dallas.

It didn?t get much better after he got traded by the Cowboys, as he lasted just four months in St. Louis, then a month in Miami, before finding some stability in Detroit the past two seasons, mostly as a fixture on special teams.

If you?ve kept an eye on the Patriots [team stats] practice sessions through the offseason up until now, it?s been easy to spot the guy with the long-flowing blond mane on special teams. That?s Carpenter.

The surprise?

We?ve also witnessed a steady diet of the ponytailed wonder playing linebacker. He was there yesterday in the dime package. In fact, he was the one calling the plays in the huddle with normal signal-caller Jerod Mayo off the field.

Will this be how it goes when the season starts? Maybe, maybe not. But it?s interesting how quickly Carpenter has come in, picked up the defense, and asserted himself as an important part of it.

Maybe the Ohio State product has finally found his niche. Or, maybe, it?s Bill Belichick who figured out a role that?s best suited to the 29-year-old linebacker, whose father, Rob, was also once under Belichick?s tutelage as a member of the New York Giants (1981-85).

?Coach Belichick obviously has a reputation for getting the most out of all of his players at every level,? Rob Carpenter, now a high school football coach, said when reached yesterday in Lancaster, Ohio. ?I?m hoping and anticipating he?ll get the most out of Bobby.?

Belichick did it with another ex-Buckeye, Mike Vrabel, who was toiling in Pittsburgh as a non-starter. Vrabel had just seven sacks in four seasons with the Steelers before coming to Foxboro. Playing outside linebacker in the Patriots? 3-4 system made him a Pro Bowler.

Carpenter, who was taken 18th overall in the 2006 NFL draft by then-Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, might not achieve those lofty heights, but he might shore up an area that?s killed the Patriots in recent years. Without a doubt, he appears best suited in coverage.

To hear his former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel tell it, there couldn?t be a better fit for Carpenter than Belichick and the Patriots defense.

?I just think it?s a good marriage. It makes perfect sense he?d be part of that group,? Tressel said, when reached yesterday. ?For starters, his football IQ is terrific, and coverage has always been one of his strengths. I can remember the first time we were totally convinced he was going to be a great one, was when his high school team was over for a 7-on-7 passing tournament. And we saw that big guy open his hips, and cover a lot of ground and have good instincts as he read route progressions. He was just well beyond his years in terms of reading the passing game.?

Is Bobby Carpenter?s long blond hair going, going . . . . ??????

For one of the item?s in today?s Sunday NFL notes, I asked Bobby Carpenter recently about the possibility of a haircut.

Perhaps you?ve noticed the long blond ponytail that sticks out the back of his football helmet? Any chance of the Patriots linebacker chopping off those long locks, or at least getting a trim?

??We?ll see,?? Carpenter said. ??I know it?ll make my wife happy when I do. It?ll come off one day. I?m just not sure when.??

Like Carpenter, fellow Ohio State pal A.J. Hawke wore his hair long, but got it cut recently. So we?ll see if Carpenter follows suit, although looking at him in Tampa, he may have gotten a bit of a trim, but nothing more.
