LB Chris Spielman (2x All-American, 4x Pro Bowl, 3x All-Pro, CFB HOF)

WoodyWorshiper

THINK, Before You Speak
Former College Pick'Em Champ
This University just lost possibly the best Recruiting Coordinator in the country.

Could the time ever be more perfect to add Chris Spielman to the TOSU football staff to fill this role?

Spielman is so TRUE Buckeye, his own personal story is one of the best I've ever heard (his dad TELLING him to call Coach Bruce and commit when he began to 'waver").

Chris seems to be the perfect fit for this position. I don't know how Stephanie is doing or if in Chris' mind this is even an option. But, most high school kids in Ohio that are judged as "blue chippers" probably have fathers in the age range of 43-50. "Perfect" ages for remembering what Chris meant to TOSU football and his dedication to the game and moreso, to his family.

Having Chris Spielman walk into any kid's home here in Ohio has got to be an incredible experience. Having Chris tell his story and what TOSU can give to you as a player and a person has GOT to be tough to say "no" to.

Spielmen would embody OSU better than anyone could, but his lack of coaching and in this case recruiting would serisouly hamper him. But if JT decided he was right for the job I would be pumped.

Hubs and Dayton, just how wouldn't Speilman be great as a recruiter?

I'd love for Chris to be coaching for us as much as anyone and I would never doubt his ability on the field. I have mixed emotions as far as recruiting goes. Having a fairly young coach who was a collegiate All-American and a Pro Bowler can reap huge benefits. His passion and intensity are unmatched. The problem I see is that Chris is just too damn honest and old school. I can't see him kissing the ass of 17-18 year olds. He's not going to sugar coat things. These days, kids expect to be told how good they are and that they're going to start as soon as they walk on campus. I can't see Chris doing that.

This quote is mostly true, but not ALL blue-chippers are like that. Look at Zwick and Ginn. I think Spielman would be an excellent recruiter, but I don't know if he's ready to assume the role of recruiting coordinater. If he could work for tOSU as a recruiter for a couple of years, and then move up, I would feel a lot more comfortable about it.

I have limited exposure to Chris. I don't get to hear his radio show. In fact the only time I've heard him talk was when he covered one of the Buckeye games for ESPN. But he came across to me as being an influencial speaker. He did an interview with AJ Hawk and seemed to connect with him pretty well. So I think he'd probably do a good job of recruiting especially in and around Ohio. As far as his coaching abilities, that would be the question. Are they to level that would justify a salary high enough to be able to lure him from ESPN? (Question, not statement)

I recently read "What it Means to be a Buckeye" and one of the things that struck me about the book was that every player who played with or right after Chris Spielman mentioned him. This was true of no other player. They talked about his work ethic, his intensity, his dedication to the team. Cris Carter more or less implied that the hardest part of his 'agent' episode was disappointing Cris.

I would love to see Chris as a coach at OSU. But when folks talk about brining him in at a level above position coach I cringe. I have seen him proposed for DC and even HC when the job was open. That is absurd. These positions have a lot to do with organizational skills. What does that column look like on his resume? Listening to him on the radio I love his enthusiasm, but get lost in his thought process at times.

The RC position is about organzation as well. It is also about good judgement - knowing what approach to use with each kid - not bulldozing them with 'Go Bucks' enthusiasm. For the right type of player Chirs could be the ultimate 'closer'. But beyond that he needs to start at the bottom like any other coach and earn that next step.

I don't see how Chris Spielman would be a good fit for this job. We're asking for someone who has never recruited at this level to come in and run the entire recruiting process plus organize the summer camps. I wouldn't mind Spielman on staff, but not to fulfill the RC job opening.

He doesn't necessarily have to be the recruiting coordinater. Its highly possible one of the other coaches may take that position. Speilmans pressence would help in michigan not to mention ohio due to his playing days in detroit. He commands respect. If his life is at a point right now that he can commit himself to coaching i would love to see him get his shot.

And you think Conley did? There's no doubt in my mind that Chris would be a great recruiter. Maybe he shouldn't be hired as the actual recruiting coordinator itself, but at least as one of the main recruiters.

Everytime there's a position on the staff open, everybody clamours for Spiels to be hired. I'd love to see it, but have come to the conclusion that if it hasn't happened by now then it will probably never happen. I wonder if Chris attempt to take the head coach job a few years back hasn't hurt his chances for becoming a member of the staff in some way.
