LB Chris Worley (Official Thread)

CHRIS WORLEY COULD PLAY MULTIPLE POSITIONS IN FINAL HOME GAME OF HIS CAREER AT OHIO STATE

It's only fitting that Chris Worley is preparing to play multiple linebacker spots ahead of his final game at Ohio Stadium on Saturday.

Worley, who started his career as an outside linebacker, moved inside this season out of necessity after the departure of Raekwon McMillan to the NFL Draft. After missing three games to a lower body injury suffered against Army, Worley returned in limited action in a win over Nebraska before becoming a full-time starter again in time for Ohio State's 39-38 win over Penn State.

During Worley's absence, Tuf Borland filled in admirably, collecting 28 tackles including a career-high 12 against Army. It appeared Borland would resume his spot on the bench with Worley's return, however injuries to both Jerome Baker and Dante Booker forced the Ohio State coaching staff to bring Borland back into the starting lineup and put Worley back outside, where he collected 69 tackles in 2016.

With Baker expected to be back this week against Illinois and Booker's status still in question, Worley said Tuesday he has been playing both inside and outside linebacker in practice so that he is prepared for any situation that may arise.

"I am pretty comfortable with all the linebacker (spots). I know them inside and out. The good thing about this past week was, the game plan shrunk a little bit," he said. "The focus was do your job, go out there and win. We got back to that this past week.”

Football: Chris Worley’s versatility provides Ohio State with additional linebacker depth

IMG_9488-1eqtqt3-1024x683.jpg

When outside linebackers Jerome Baker and Dante Booker were announced as inactive Saturday morning, just before kickoff of Ohio State’s game against Michigan State, the only known replacement on the outside was sophomore Malik Harrison.

Beyond that, speculation emerged as to how the rest of the lineup would look.

As it turned out, redshirt senior linebacker Chris Worley shifted outside from middle linebacker and redshirt freshman Tuf Borland started in the middle, where he had filled in earlier in the year when Worley was out with a foot injury.

Moving outside was not a challenge for Worley, however. The linebacker had previously played outside during the 2016 season, so shifting back was hardly a daunting task.

“I’m pretty comfortable at all the linebackers. I know them all inside-out,” Worley said Tuesday. “The thing about last week was the game plan was pretty strengthened a little bit and everything was just focused on do your job and go out there and win. That’s what we were based on. We got back to that this past week. And not just me, everyone looked better last week.”

AFTER A STRONG SHOWING AT SHRINE GAME, CHRIS WORLEY TURNS FULL ATTENTION TOWARD NFL COMBINE PREPARATION

90493_h.jpg

Former Ohio State linebacker Chris Worley has reason to feel confident after his week at the East-West Shrine Game.

After drawing praise for his performance all week from scouts and outside observers alike, Worley believes he strengthened his case for the 2018 NFL draft by participating in last week’s all-star game in St. Petersburg, Fla.

"I think I did pretty well this past week and I showed some things that I wasn’t able to showcase at Ohio State that I was able to do," Worley said Sunday at the Midwest Sports Spectacular, one day after playing in the Shrine Game. "I would say that I made an impact. Just from feedback from the teams and scouts and things like that. Hearing from them and how they viewed that I did during practice, it was fun."

While the practices are generally considered to be the most important part of Shrine Game week – as nearly all of the NFL scouts who made the trip to the Shrine Game went to watch practices and left before Saturday’s game itself – Worley felt like he put his versatility and ability to pick things up quickly on display in the game, as injuries to teammates forced him to move back to outside linebacker after practicing all week at middle linebacker.

"It’s one thing doing it for a team that you’ve been playing for four or five years, but I played all three linebacker positions in one week," said Worley, who previously played all three linebacker positions in the 4-3 defense at Ohio State this past season. "And learning the playbook in one week. And it just shows the kind of competitor I am, the kind of teammate I am, but also, when you turn that film on, it shows that I can play football as well. So at the end of the day, that’s what the NFL teams are looking for, a football player."

UDFA Chris Worley “looked good enough” to have a shot at Bengals’ roster

Worley continues to make his push for the Bengals’ Week 1 roster.

Chris Worley is shaping up to be the latest undrafted free agent to carve out an NFL career in Cincinnati.

Almost as soon as the draft ended, the former Ohio State Buckeyes linebacker signed with the Bengals, becoming arguably their best UDFA signing. He also is playing a position that the Bengals need more depth at, so he got a chance to get a lot of reps in OTAs

It sounds like Worley made the most of those opportunities and left a lasting impression on his new team, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.

Undrafted rookie Chris Worley has looked good enough early to pencil in a run at what figures to be Burfict’s Opening Day roster spot.

Worley comes to the Bengals after a standout career at Ohio State, where he actually played with first-round pick Billy Price and third-round pick Sam Hubbard.

Billy Price and Sam Hubbard are the 11th pair of college teammates drafted by the Bengals since 2000[/paste:font]
Marvin Lewis says Sam Hubbard will be part of Bengals’ rotation “very early, right away”
Over his four years at Ohio State, Worley recorded 153 tackles, one interception, and forced three fumbles. As a senior in 2017, he had 56 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack and one forced fumble.

Worley seems like a great fit for the Bengals, who have a nice history of developing undrafted free agents into solid role players or even impact starters. That’s especially true at linebacker with guys like Vontaze Burfict, Vincent Rey, Brandon Bell and Hardy Nickerson all going undrafted before joining the Bengals.

Speaking of Burfict, he’s suspended for the first four games of the 2018 season, so that means a different linebacker will be occupying his 53-man roster spot for at least four games. Worley figures to be one of the guys in contention for that spot, along with Evans, Bell and Nickerson.

It’s safe to think Rey, Nick Vigil, Malik Jefferson and Preston Brown will all be on the final roster, so there’s only 2-3 more spots open for Worley to win (Carl Lawson is still listed as a linebacker, though he mostly plays a defensive end).

Worley still has an uphill battle ahead just to make the week 1 roster, let alone keep his spot once Burfict is back. Guys like Bell and Nickerson spent time on the 53-man roster last season, so they’re ahead of the curve going into training camp.

This will be one of the tighter training camp battles to watch.
