Former LB Coach Al Washington (Official Thread)

I have seen a lot of people seem unhappy with the hires we have made. Yes, Mattison is older but he has a wealth of experience and can help prepare the future. Hafley has had nothing but good things said about him, a solid track record of players, and known as an elite recruiter. Now adding Washington on top of it, I am thrilled with our hires. Greg never really impressed me but his recruiting was decent. I was excited about Grinch at first but seeing our DB look lost most of the time made me quickly tire of him. Davis has led tOSU to have the worst LB performance I have seen here ever. Adding Washington we have added a solid LB coach, great recruiter, and someone with tOSU ties. It also doesn't hurt we took him from scUM.

How many gregs are there? We literally have hired 3 dudes named Greg in the past 3 years.

Anyways I always though Mattisons defenses were well coached and good defenses. He was elite though when he had the horses to do what he wanted which was during his time at Florida. Which is exactly what he will have here.

This defensive staff is full of great coaches and also recruiters. Should get fun soon.

Business decision as defined by an idiot fan: Whatever makes the most sense financially as long as you haven't already made "enough" money and as long as it still benefits what I personally want.

How about, unless he retires, he is still coaching, meaning he still wants to coach well, and win. Not, he can still coach and stick with a shitty all around team/staff here because he is getting paid and that’s what is most important to a man I know nothing about.

I can totally relate to that. I've coached teams that were OK and had mediocre records... and I've coached some teams that frick'n killed. Killing > mediocre any day. And that's not just because winning is fun... it is. But in my experience, coaching talented kids who buy in and play for each other is a way better place to be. If I had to do it for a living, you bet I'd be looking at going to a place with a winning culture and the players and resources to continue winning.

This is very true...I meant old schiano...figured his experience with college and NFL would pay off and it just didnt...too many bad coverages and blown plays

Would’ve liked Marcus Freeman as a Co DC/LB coach, but this is an extremely good hire. I’m pretty happy with this. In two years when Mattison retires and other coaches are poached, I would like to see Freeman given an opportunity (assuming he doesn’t have HC aspirations by then).

"This should make the board more bearable today."

Already an amazing hire on so many fronts, but the conspiracy theories over on that thread make it a million times more amazing. This is a home run hire for pretty much every reason...better position coach, incredible recruiter, stealing one from the enemy, etc. I wanted Freeman, but completely fine with this one. Really happy to have Washington back in Ohio.

Yeah, the conspiracy theories are great. It's like you go to dinner with someone who has unlimited funds and a vast knowledge of wine. You say "Let's have this wine here" and he says "Well, that wine is very good. However, let's have this ultra snooty expensive stuff.. it's on me" and you say "Well.. fine by me." and you think to yourself... "meh..wine is wine..." and it comes and you taste it and you realize... Goddamn, this is really fucking good!
