Re: Twenty-seven years ago, Bill Davis was the best man at Urban Meyer’s wedding.

They’d met as football players at the University of Cincinnati. An Ashtabula native, Meyer was a walk-on defensive back. Davis, from Youngstown, was a quarterback and wide receiver.

They were together at UC only for the 1985 season, but they quickly bonded before setting out on their coaching paths. Davis has coached 24 years in the NFL, most recently as the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-15. This year, he was an analyst inside the Buckeyes’ program.

He will have a bigger role next year. Ohio State announced in a news release Davis he will join its coaching staff as Luke Fickell’s replacement.

He's obviously the BEST MAN for the job......

I don't think Urban could have found anyone more qualified. The fact that they've known each other for years, he knows Ohio and that he was already in-house is just icing on the cake.

I wouldn't say he "knows Ohio".
He has never recruited a day in his life.
I have no concern about his coaching/technical chops despite specious results as an NFL DC. The fact he achieved that level is impressive.
But his lack of recruiting reps and name recognition/relationships is a concern.
It will put my dead cat theory to the test.
That is anybody who makes an effort can sell OSU/Urban Meyer.

You can take your pessimistic fear of the unknown hot take to the bank all you want. Fact is Urban wouldn't hire him if he had any doubt he would not be an elite recruiter and produce on the recruiting trail for the university

I also tend to be of the thought that his long time experience as an assistant and a DC in the NFL fits perfectly with Ohio State's "Developed Here" mantra on the recruiting trail (and practice field, obviously)

I think I heard you saying the same thing about him in another thread:lol: I do not know how you can say he does not know Ohio when he went to school at Cincinnati and has coach in the northeast quadrant of the state plus he has coached for a number of NFL teams so I am sure he has quite a few contacts. It seems like you do not like the guy or something. I could not think of a more qualified guy around to coach LB's or whatever. I guess he will not be your "best man".

I would not mind to see Billy Davis take over at LB coach and possibly co-DC. Would be a step down for him since he coached in the pros but is a great friend of Urban's. Was in his wedding and they played together at Cincinnati. He is from Youngstown which would give him Ohio connections. Probably a long shot.
:pimp:

Davis has NFL chops but was generally panned as a DC.

I wouldn't view it as a "step down" for him as he is currently a low paid analyst.

Regardless my concern with him isn't from a technical standpoint but rather recruiting.

He has never recruited and has little name recognition or contacts.
Your previous response regarding Bill Davis and recruiting:shake:

It would do the opposite of "test" your "theory." If he had previously been a recruiter and was terrible at it, THEN it would test your theory. A terrible recruiter suddenly pulling in stars at Ohio State would be what you are looking for. He could be a hell of a recruiter and we just don't know so you'll never know if that can be attributed to his skill or the mighty power of Ohio State/Urban Meyer.

Just think for a second...please.
