IN GOOD HANDS: NEWEST OHIO STATE ASSISTANT LOOKING AT LOADED LINEBACKER UNIT FOR THE 2017 CLASS AND BEYOND

78352_h.jpg,qitok=f_HMzRGO.pagespeed.ce.vKEracHIei.jpg

Comfort and relationships are arguably the two biggest factors when it comes to the recruitment of the nation's top high school talent.

Luke Fickell will look to stymie Deshaun Watson and a potent Clemson offense on New Year's Eve before taking over as new head coach at the University of Cincinnati. His work on the recruiting front has been stellar, and many Buckeye fans have wondered what's next as a new face will look to lead a group of young linebackers.

The addition of veteran NFL coach Bill Davis brings some answers, but some questions still remain surrounding the unit and its future. While Davis' role hasn't officially been announced, his experience working with linebackers makes it reasonable to assume that he will play an integral part in the position's development.

Davis last coached at the collegiate level in 1991 when he was a graduate assistant in East Lansing. Needless to say, a lot has changed in the last 25 years. Success on the recruiting trail is imperative at any powerhouse college program and that's especially true for a one that is run by Urban Meyer.

It remains to be seen how Davis will adjust to the demands of being on Meyer's staff, but the Buckeyes' linebacker recruiting isn't exactly struggling for the 2017 and 2018 classes.

To Do List: Buckeye Linebackers Coach Billy Davis

BakerEndzone.jpg

Jerome Baker provides zero question marks for Billy Davis, but he's one of the few.

The Ohio State defense will enter spring football with around nine scholarship linebackers , yet only three of them will have any starting experience. While Jerome Baker, Chris Worley, and Dante Booker provide a pretty good start, there is still much to find out and build where the rest of the group is concerned.

The Buckeyes will be breaking in a new linebackers coach in Billy Davis, but he's also been around the program for a little while, so he knows what OSU has in his linebacker room. His job during the offseason and spring will be to build a two-deep that can step in seamlessly when called upon. How well he does that will depend on how well he manages his to-do list, which might look something like the one below.

1. Find a middle linebacker.

The first part of this task is finding the three best linebackers on the team and then placing them where they best serve the defense. Common sense would seem that this could be a perfect spot for Dante Booker after missing the vast majority of last season with an injury. Booker could have played later in the season last year, but they held him out to preserve an extra season for him, which means they don't plan on him playing behind Baker this year. At least that's what you would think. If that's not an option, however, then you've got some work ahead of you. Does Billy Davis instead try Chris Worley or Jerome Baker in the middle since they know the defense? Or is it time for a younger player to get the call? And if it's time for a young guy, how many do you go through in order to find the one capable of what is asked of that position? All of these questions are why the easiest answer remains Booker if possible.

2. Find the next Jerome Baker.

Just think about where this defense would have been without Jerome Baker a year ago. He stepped in perfectly when Dante Booker went down, and not only did he keep the standards high, he raised them. He wasn't just a guy who filled in admirably, he was a playmaker. That's why Ohio State needs to find their next Jerome Baker. They need a fourth who can come in wherever he may be needed. There are plenty of candidates, but those with the kind of versatility like Baker would probably have an advantage. Two names who come to mind are rising sophomores Keandre Jones and Malik Harrison, but there's still a long way to go in finding the necessary fits.

BILL DAVIS’ NFL EXPERIENCE CLEAR AS DAY WITH OHIO STATE LINEBACKERS

80990_h.jpg,qitok=Wdh9pNrC.pagespeed.ce.Y2hNgsH1xc.jpg

The question hadn’t even finished before Jerome Baker offered a reply.

“Definitely,” Baker said, rather abruptly.

Ohio State’s junior outside linebacker was asked if he could tell his new position coach, Bill Davis, had NFL experience. It was pretty clear from his quick response that was exactly one of the first things Baker noticed.

“From the first meeting you could tell this has to be an NFL meeting room because the way he coached, his style, is geared toward pro athletes,” Baker said. “You could just tell he had been in the NFL for a few years.”

Twenty-four years to be exact. That’s how long Davis coached in the NFL prior to accepting a new role this winter as Ohio State’s linebackers coach. Davis replaced longtime assistant Luke Fickell, who finally got his shot at running his own program as the head coach at Cincinnati.

Ohio State's current crop of linebackers noticed Davis’ NFL experience from the get-go.

“There’s a lot of things that he’ll say and you have to really study it and really understand and if you don’t, you’ve got to ask questions,” Baker said. “He’s not going to keep going back and going over it. If you have something you’re struggling on, you have to go ask him.”

Added senior middle linebacker Chris Worley: “He definitely has an NFL feel to him. He’s a little different than Coach Fick about how they teach. They teach the same things, but they just teach it in a different way.”

BILL DAVIS, URBAN MEYER GO WAY BACK AND THAT'S PRECISELY WHY DAVIS IS OHIO STATE'S NEW LINEBACKERS COACH

Ohio State had a massive hole to fill when Luke Fickell departed to take the head coaching position at Cincinnati.

Fickell had been with the Buckeyes as an assistant coach for over a decade — with a one-year stint as interim head coach mixed in — and it wasn't going to be easy for anybody to just step right in and replace him as Ohio State's linebackers coach.

Urban Meyer knew he had the guy he wanted, however.

Bill Davis, a longtime friend of Meyer's, spent all of the 2016 season as a volunteer in Columbus and when Fickell departed, Meyer opted to bring Davis on full-time. He had 20-plus years of coaching experience in the NFL and had been a friend of Meyer's since college, so it seemed like a perfect fit.

“We started out playing college ball together at Cincinnati. He had just finished with the Braves and was walking on because he was a professional athlete," Davis said Tuesday after Ohio State's third spring practice. It was his first meeting with reporters since being hired officially as a full-time assistant Dec. 21.

"We had a lot in common and we both knew we’d get into coaching eventually so that was a bond right from the get-go for us. We just became good friends and as we went on he was ahead of me a little bit. He went out and started coaching and I was still playing. Eventually, I caught up and went the coaching route.”

TOP PROSPECTS UNFAZED BY OHIO STATE LINEBACKERS COACH BILL DAVIS' LACK OF EXPERIENCE ON THE RECRUITING TRAIL

81101_h.jpg,qitok=d9JtZ550.pagespeed.ce.qDp5_m4vSi.jpg

When Ohio State hired linebackers coach Bill Davis in late December, everyone's first concern was his lack of experience on the recruiting trail. Davis looked at it in a different light, however.

"Like I told Coach [Urban] Meyer, that's a positive," Davis said after a recent practice. "You tell me how you want it done, and that's how you're going to get it done. The routine and the way we do recruiting here is 'I'm a blank slate' and we're making it whatever he wants it to be. I'm attacking the recruiting trail like the rest of the staff is."

The 51-year-old Davis occupied an unofficial advisory role for the Buckeyes last season, but coached in the NFL for 23 seasons. He replaced Luke Fickell, the longest-tenured member and most active recruiter on the staff, who left after 15 years to become the head coach at Cincinnati.

“I think Coach Fickell did an outstanding job and the work speaks for itself," Davis said. "How many NFL players have Coach Fickell and the Ohio State Buckeyes under his coaching got into the NFL? I think that’s real. There’s no team that has more NFL linebackers than Ohio State."

That testimony resonates with recruits, which is why the Buckeyes were able to land five-star Baron Browning earlier this year in spite of Fickell's departure. And seeing as the ultimate goal of any prospect is to make it to the NFL, it's difficult to find any downside to Davis' hire.

"Coach Davis and I have developed a good relationship," Virginia Beach, Virginia, five-star linebacker Teradja Mitchell said. "His NFL experience outweighs that by far."
