Bill Davis (LB Coach Arizona Cardinals)

They actually let him speak tonight..first time I am aware of. Is playing great in practice a lot like being a Spring Game superstar. I expect Bam Childress to take things over at WR at any second to make a late Heisman push. Sorry about your luck Haskins!!!!!
It's Barn Childress...get it straight.

I think we easily forget how young our Defense is. We also fail to realize that the Defense has been hit with numerous injuries and how those injuries have hit our most experienced players. Bosa (now gone), Jones, Cooper and Landers have all had injuries and even missed entire games. Harrison and Borland have had injuries. One is slowed down the other missed a game. Fuller and Arnette have had injuries. One missed a game and the other has missed long stretch of playing time and may also be out this week.

Yet, we keep winning.

And, at this point in time they are giving up less points than the 2014 team did. Think what this D will look like when guys get healthy and players get more experienced.

Our LB's weren't young last year and they often looked lost. Baker and Worley did not look like their 2016 versions.

I'm not expecting them to play like the 2005 trio, but I'd like to see our LB's at least look confident out there.

I'm not a coach though. Maybe he's doing a better job than I perceive.

Could a more avid NFL fan answer this for me:

Do NFL DCs still walk all of the LBs up to within 1-2 feet of the LOS on 3rd and long against a team that excels in the RPO game?

Also the athleticism and instincts of an NFL LB are quite different than a college LB (particularly the very green LBs not named Harrison).

Not an avid NFL watcher at all but logically, not many teams are primarily run teams in the NFL anymore so my guess is that LB's don't have run first responsibilities and therefore aren't as susceptible to the PRO woes that OSU LB's suffer from.

The LB's at the LOS is fine, imo, and it has the added benefit of causing blocking assignment confusion for the OL. When the DL was much more threatening this year that was the smart play. Recall how many times we said the DL is masking a lot of mistakes by the LB's?

Problem as I see it is you put the LB's at the LOS but then they don't attack. They catch the OL block and get caught in the wash. Remove the safety net behind them on a handful of plays per game and you get those 80+ yard TD runs.

If you are going to put them up there then teach the right technique. Send them hard.

Don’t sell yourself short.

That was worth at least a nickel.

OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK: HOW THIS YEAR'S OFFENSE CHANGED THE OFFENSIVE LINE, BILL DAVIS EVALUATES HIMSELF AND INJURY UPDATES

BILL DAVIS EVALUATES HIMSELF AND THE LINEBACKERS

He’s in just his second year as an assistant coach at Ohio State, but Bill Davis has garnered a fairly sizable chunk of heat for how he has coached the linebackers.

Last season as a first-year position coach at the college level, the NFL lifer caught criticism for how his unit played at times, especially after Iowa diced the second level of Ohio State’s defense with its tight ends. Chris Worley was moved inside before heading back to outside linebacker at midseason, and Jerome Baker seemed to regress after entering the season with high expectations.

Davis’ linebackers have once again had some up-and-down moments early in this season. So, how would Davis evaluate himself?

“I'm always trying to improve and get better,” Davis said. “ I think I'm a better coach this year than I was last year. I'll say that every year of my career no matter where I'm at – the NFL or college. College is a little bit different. Like everybody, I had to adjust, and I think I made some good adjustments to my coaching style. I'm always striving to be better.”

None of the key contributors – Malik Harrison, Tuf Borland, Pete Werner and Baron Browning – entered the season with a full season as a starter already under their belt, and all of them will be back next season. That gives Davis optimism about the unit moving into the future.

“The future of the linebacker group is really in a healthy place,” Davis said. “These young men are getting a lot of reps. We're young. We have one senior, only one guy who's leaving. It's a good thing, and they're getting better every week. So, I continue to strive to get better myself.”

I am a long way from being a fan of LB performance this year

BUT

Seeing the out-of-context quotes that the media used for their headlines/links from the Davis interviews, I was left thinking, “I hope that’s taken out-of-context and I REALLY hope that the full interview gives a different impression.”

That was exactly the case. Davis’ responses to the questions inspired a LOT more confidence than the quotes used in headlines and links.

I haven’t made a judgement on Davis yet, but the media have been a long way from fair with him. Like the rest of you, I’ll judge based on results.

I mean... the results are there.
I feel like DBs have made incremental improvements game to game.
LBs look like a weak position since last year... no improvement... maybe even regression ... and we've basically seen 2 whole units of blue chip studs not get it.
