I don't understand why you would enter the transfer portal in mid season. However, I guess after 3 games you can count the year as a red shirt. Gant will have 2 more years of eligibility at his new school. I'm guessing any more transfers now will probably come at seasons end.
Just sayin': Might be nice to see Day reward one of the senior walk-ons (like Mitch Rossi or Cade Kacherski) with Gant's scholarship. It would at least pay for their Spring semester, etc.

I guess that if you are a Jr and/or Sr and behind a couple guys that are Fr and/or Soph(s) on the depth cart, or not even on the depth cart; you could be a candidate for the transfer portal. However, these guys should also consider "life after football". If you can't break the 2 deep at Ohio State just maybe 1) you aren't going to make it in the NFL either and 2) you should stay at Ohio State and concentrate on getting your degree in a career field that offers a good financial future.

I was a little confused as well at first. However, him essentially being a true junior with the COVID rule, he got out before he burned his redshirt and can have two years of eligibility left.
I wonder if this might be more of the norm for older players who have never redshirted. Not seeing the time you had hoped for during the early part of your 3rd year? Give it 3-4 games and then enter the portal to be able to preserve a year of eligibility.

If he's after more playing time; he should get it here. At least he didn't leave trashing the program like another linebacker did. I really hope it works out well for him too.

“Oh, absolutely. It's incredible. I couldn't ask for anything more,” Gant told Eleven Warriors. “You’ve got your family here and supporters everywhere and familiar faces everywhere. I'm playing a lot of football. I have a family in these players. I think I’m well-respected here, and I respect a lot of the players here. It’s just very homey here and just very natural here, and I think that I'm exactly where I need to be.”
Gant is grateful for the opportunity he had to play at Ohio State, believing his four years as a Buckeye were crucial in his development to becoming the player he is now.
“I don't think I would be half the player I was if I went anywhere else,” Gant said in a phone interview on Monday. “I think that the coaches there are incredible. I think that the players are phenomenal. I think playing against the best is a great opportunity every day for practice. And molded me into the person that I am and the player that I am.
“With Coach Mick’s strength development plan and all that, I think that the opportunity there is endless. And I think that I used the best of my ability by putting my full effort into their program. And they did their best to mold me into the player that I am today. So I owe a lot to them.”
