Scout $ - Ohio Linebacker In Shock After New Offer

6/30

By Berk.....Offered by Ohio State, to go along with offers from Buffalo, Bowling Green, Kent State, Ohio, Cincinnati, Indiana & Purdue.

I can't believe we are just now finding out and talking about this guy. Luke plays the position like recent Buckeyes of the past in high school and he looks versatile enough to play MIKE, SAM, or possibly WILL or LEO... wow. A little puzzled by his lack of offers from bigger schools, because there is no doubt that this kid is talented.

LOVE this offer.

Similar to Najee Murray, if a kid doesn't camp and actively seek out recruiting attention, the chances of them having offers go down. I would imagine this is a similar situation, but that is only a theory.

Luke Roberts - LB - Lancaster
Luke Roberts from Lancaster called me last week about advice on some early offers that he had received. Two were from Big Ten schools and playing in the Big Ten has always been his goal. To me, that is not always a good idea. Another school asked him to wait til the fall, because they needed to see more. He had a good camp, but they needed to see him make plays. That school was honest with him. They needed to see more, which I feel their honesty was important. My advice - "Go with your gut feeling."

On Saturday, he was going to the last senior day at O-State. I told him in a phone call to bust his butt and run possessed. He is a "mike" linebacker pure and simple. Passes the eyeball test. 6'1 everyday. Runs well downhill. Excellent tackler. Tough guy. Most of all, he competes. But he needed to run well to impress OSU coaches. Ran 4.64 and 4.25 pro shuttle. Now this is not a "raw talent time," this is an OSU time. Yesterday, Coach Fickell called and offered him a scholarship.

My worry: Luke ran well and changed direction well. Natural leader. Tremendous competitor. Tackle to tackle tough. Competed well at my combine. However, he is not a five star or a four star. He might only be a two star. Oh my!! If he is only a two-star, can he play in the Big Ten? Of course, I am being sarcastic. Luke Roberts is a "Lights out linebacker," and I wish him the very best.

Man I love this offer. Kid gets downhill in a hurry, takes fantastic angles and fills gaps with aggression. Not going to blow you away with lateral movement but his instincts are phenomenal. You also have to like how quickly he closes on the ball carrier...this is the kind of kid that may not burn the turf on a 40, but as soon as you put a ball carrier in front of him, he turns on the jets. Best part though is he does not miss a tackle...when Luke hits you, you aren't going anywhere but back. Really, really pumped about this kid.

He's definitely a Mike LBer? Or whats the thoughts on him? Wonder if this is a replacement Mike for what Ejuan Price would have filled. Not that it matters, I just want Buckeyes!

I think he is an ideal MIKE...we want him filling gaps from the middle. He could play outside, but I would have to think we are playing him in the middle.

Dang, that kid can play.. not sure what level of comp that is, but he can run and he can thump people

Lancaster plays a solid schedule every year and this kid stands out from the competition. Coach Carpenter knows how to develop talent, especially linebackers. I saw Luke the other day at a fund raiser and he looked huge, every bit of 6'2"-6'3"/225.

He's a legit LB, he reminds me more of Hawk than Bobby though. Luke takes great angles to the ball carrier and packs a punch.

Look out for 2014 Lancaster DE Isaiah Dexter. He was not only the only freshman to play varsity, but he was one of the best players on the team and projects to be coach Carp's best prospect ever, potentially better than Bobby Carpenter.

Coach Rob Carpenter has been known for developing D-1 linebackers for the last decade at Lancaster......His 4 sons all went to D-1 schools along with other solid players. Roberts will committ to OSU by the fall. He will be the 3rd Buckeye from Lancaster in coach Carpenter's tenure (Bobby Carpenter & Jim Cordle).

A better prospect than Roberts and future buckeye -

ISAIAH DEXTER PROFILE.....
School: LANCASTER
Height: 6 ft - 3 inches
Weight: 244 lbs
Position: DE-Defensive End
Class of: 2014
City: Lancaster
State: Ohio

Dexter was not only the only freshman player to letter for the Gales last season, he started and was an absolute beast. He also won numerous track meets in discus and shot. He can already bench press 370 and squats 515lbs. This kid will no doubt be the 4th Buckeye that coach Carpenter develops. This is a stud that will be top5 in the state by the time he's a junior.
