Just sayin': Ohio State already has a head coach and (not one but) 2 defensive coordinators that we really don't want to lose. Besides a MAC head coaching job, his best shot might be if Fickell moves up to a P5 school and he gets the Juggalos head coaching job; however, I really don't think Fickell is leaving Cincinnati any time soon.

How do we expect this to work, exactly, with Coombs currently in the DC position?

We don’t need help recruiting, we might need help putting together an effective scheme and play calling... it’s to be determined how Freeman does in that regard without Fickell over his shoulder.

I thought it went without saying that it’s too late to do anything this off-season

And the word “might” was used advisedly. Agree that we don’t know how good Freeman is without Fickell. The jury is also out on Coombs imho

This year will determine a lot
