LB Pete Werner (New Orleans Saints)

Dammit you're right... okay 2nd biggest.

OK, now I'm curious how old/young you are BuckI. Love Pete, but suspect on those measurables. I'll list a few other big hitters from Ohio State that are right in that size range: Randy Gradishar (233), Tom Cousineau (225), Marcus Marek (225), Pepper Johnson (250), Chris Spielman (248), AJ Hawk (240), James Laurinaitis (248), Matt Wilhelm (245), Steve Tovar (246) ... the list goes on. Granted most of those weights are NFL numbers, but I highly doubt Pete is identical in size to Pepper Johnson. And I understand that age puts a positive spin on past glories, but can almost guarantee you that most historians would say the ones I listed are bigger hitters than Pete Warner. Wish him all the best in the NFL ... has all the tools to be a good one.

I like Werner... but there used to be this guy Katzenmoyer that was paid under the table by dentists... cuz he hit kinda hard

Werner stacks up well athletically to @3yardsandacloud list.. but when you said biggest hitters... not sure he'd even make the list let alone lead it

In my 30s so I remember James and obviously AJ and I'd say Pete still had the more notable hits than them. Underrated player you threw out was Wilhelm who obviously had the one big hit we all remember.

Still though for me I think what makes Pete right up there as far as having quite a few really good shots was he is probably faster than anyone you mentioned while also being 240 pounds. So the velocity he could generate was pretty impressive.

Obviously Pete isnt as good as many of the guys you listed but Pete IMO was a very underrated player.

I saw all of those guys play and, to me, it comes down to the difference in the game then vs now.

Could Pete Werner be the gap filling thumper that all of those guys were? Maybe. We'll never know.

Could any of those guys drop back and play safety 2-3 times a game and be asked to cover to the extent Pete was? Maybe. We'll never know.

My opinion is that Pete is athletic enough to have bulked up and played old school LB. I also don't think many of those guys could have covered like Pete has had to do but some were no doubt athletic enough to have done it (they wouldn't have been as big because they wouldn't have had to be so big).

That's why I never try to compare players from different era's. The game has changed.

Good points and I think Jax probably makes the best one. Game is different, players are different, equipment is different. Pete is asked to play a different style than those before and is asked to drop in coverage much more often. Even the difference in pads ... Pete isn't wearing the giant, almost wing like, shoulder pads of those in years past. Maybe that affects my perception of his size. I've been around Spielman, Pepper, and Hawk without pads ... I'd be shocked if Warner is really that size. Pepper in particular was a monster and he moved frighteningly well (if you were an opponent). I guess we'll never really know who is fastest either, but I loved watching Warner play. None of my comments should be considered a slight on him in anyway. In any event, it makes me wonder which is more valuable as a linebacker. Flat-out speed, or quickness. And I define quickness as anticipation, reaction and best angles to get from point A to point B. Anyway, hope Pete continues to make us proud in the NFL.

Mike doss could not have played safety 3 years later with how the game shifted, but probably could have shined at OLB.

Werner is severely underappreciated because of Tuf, and coming into prominence during the worst defense in ages at osu in 2018.

As for hitters, he's not close to Kat, Hawk, Wilhelm, Spielman among others.

He's more versatile than most of the guys on that list though. The only one I'd have to think through is Kat, and I think he was more stupendous and too-big-for-that-speed than versatile when compared to a Swiss army knife like Pete.

Wanted to mention and forgot, in Pete's defense of the "big hitter" label, the rule book has changed significantly too. The things (hits) that were common place in many of the years gone by would result in a personal foul and most likely ejection in today's game. Just another way that Jax's thoughts about different eras rings true in these comparisons.
