LB Ryan Shazier (All B1G, All-American, 2017 Pro Bowl)

Indeed, Ed seems like he should have decent sources.
Covered Steelers for Pittsburgh Post-Gazette since 1985. Also on 93.7 FM, KDKA-AM, KDKA-TV.

I've seen spinal contusion and spinal concussion "reported", which are different. So still early without any official word, so need to be careful about what someone from the Steelers told the players, then how they comprehended that, and then told a reporter, who in turn turned it into a "tweet report"

I've floated over to the rehab unit recently and contusion (bruise) vs a concussion is vastly different. And brain or spine does not matter, a concussion is serious stuff. You can only handle so many hits. He needs to be worried about CCN (cervical cord neurapraxia).

Article from Dr David Chao earlier tonight. He's an orthopedic surgeon in San Diego, and prior to the Chargers relocation this season, was the Chargers team doc for 17 years.

Next few hours most crucial for Ryan Shazier

The only official word on Ryan Shazier has come from the Steelers, and there was no more word planned for Monday.

Let’s hope we hear something soon.

The longer Shazier’s situation goes without further update, the more worrisome it becomes.

The best-case scenario is a spinal cord concussion, where much like a brain concussion, neurologic function shuts down temporarily. That would mean Shazier will have full recovery. The worst-case to worry about is a fracture dislocation where there is permanent neurologic damage.

On the ESPN broadcast, Steve Young said he was 10 feet away from Shazier when he made a head-down tackle and went limp, and Young said he could clearly see Shazier couldn’t move his legs.

During the second quarter, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was seen on the sideline talking to head coach Mike Tomlin.

There was rampant speculation Colbert told Tomlin that Shazier had no feeling in his lower body. We aren’t in the business of lip reading. But it is highly unusual (unheard of) and technically improper for a G.M. to be on the sideline before the end of the fourth quarter, so this was certainly a dire situation.

Tomlin declined comment when returning to the field for the second half.

The next thing we will probably hear is that Shazier is staying behind in Cincinnati.

The spinal cord is the biggest worry, not any associated fracture. Other than the neck (which is not a concern here since there was no use of a cervical collar when Shazier was strapped to the spine board), the thoracolumbar spine is where the spinal cord is most vulnerable. The junction between the thoracic spine (with rib cage protection) and the lumbar spine (low back) at T12 and L1 is the region most susceptible and where Shazier grabbed after the hit.

Whoever wrote this is either a Steeler homer or has never seen Shazier play. "He accidently led with his helmet." Sorry, but this is how he plays.

I hope he is alright, I hope he can walk but I hope he does not walk onto the football field again. For his own sake. This injury is his own fault for leading with the crown of his helmet, it is Mike Tomlin's fault for letting him to make tackles like this and it is the league's fault for letting the Steelers get away with this for so long. It goes to show the league does not care about the players for not penalizing this kind of tackling with either ejections or fines.

It's cultural thing encouraged by Tomlin. Shazier didn't play like that in Columbus.

that's just the first clip I found from a google search. My memory of him is that of a missile with no regard for his body who has always led with his helmet
