RYAN SHAZIER STILL WORKING TOWARD RETURNING TO PLAY FOOTBALL AGAIN

In his first press conference at the Pittsburgh Steelers' facility since suffering a spinal injury six months ago, former Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier told reporters that he still has his sights set on returning to play football again.

"My dream is to come back and play football again," Shazier said Wednesday. "I have that in the back of my mind every single time I go to rehab, and I just try to stay positive every single day, so I'm just trying to do everything I can to get back."

While Shazier still has a long way to go in his recovery as he looks to regain full mobility in his body, he was able to walk to the podium with a cane and stand without assistance for his press conference on Wednesday.

Shazier said his doctors have not given him a timetable for when he might be able to make a full recovery, but that they have encouraged him to "take it day by day" and that he has exceeded doctors' expectations thus far. He said the next milestone he is looking toward in his recovery is being able to walk under his own power without a cane or any assistance.

Yet even though his recovery from injury has been and will likely continue to be a lengthy process, Shazier remains undeterred in his goal to return to the sport.

"I've played this game since I was four years old, I've loved the game since I was four years old, and just 'cause I got hurt don't mean I'm going to stop loving the game of football," Shazier said.

While returning to the field could put Shazier at risk for being injured again – and receiving clearance from doctors to play again is just one of the hurdles he'll have to clear to return – he says isn't scared of that possibility, though he acknowledged he might have to learn how to play the game differently.

I hope he makes a full recovery and then immediately retires from playing football. Playing another year or just 2 isn't worth the risk...

Mike80 A MAN OF BETRAYED JUSTICE!

Good luck to him but even if he does get to a point where he might be able to play (which I think is unlikely), no team is taking that chance.

Yeah, he presumably has plenty of money and if he needs to compete he should take up American Ninjaing or triathlon or something esle that doesn't ordinarily involve violent collisions.

SKULL SESSION: RYAN SHAZIER'S FOOTBALL BRAIN STILL WORKS FINE, BIG TEN'S BEST HOOPS GIGS, AND QUARTERBACK RECRUITS HIGH ON DWAYNE HASKINS

    SHAZIER'S RETURN TO CINCINNATI.
When the Steelers last visited Cincinnati, Ryan Shazier's life changed forever after a scary hit left him clutching his lower back in pain and desperately checking for movement in his extremities.

Shazier left the field in an ambulance, and his life has never been the same since. The Pro Bowl linebacker has been sidelined since the incident – though he now has mobility – but the injury didn't take away his mind for the game. And he's using that to help his team, even if he can't do it on the field.

From Will Graves of the Associated Press:

His mere presence provides an emotional lift, but Shazier is intent on being something far beyond an avatar for inspiration. He’s become a go-between of sorts between the coaching staff and the defense. He can cut through the clutter and deliver some “real talk” when necessary.

During last Sunday’s 41-17 romp over Atlanta, Shazier sat on the bench with a tablet in hand. After every series the inside linebackers would crowd around him looking for instruction and insight. Shazier would offer words of encouragement when necessary or tips on how to avoid mistakes.

“Since he’s not playing, his mental part of the game is so great,” Dupree said. “He shares a lot of stuff with us. He lets us know stuff ahead of time before the coaches even tell us. We already know it. It keeps us on our toes.”

    ...

And in a way, Pittsburgh is counting on it. Shazier will be back on the turf in Cincinnati with the rest of the team on Sunday afternoon as the Steelers look for their first winning streak of the season. When the defense runs onto the field, he’ll linger behind, a feeling that will probably never truly feel normal.

Yet if this is the best way for him to contribute, he’ll take it. So will the teammates who have come to rely on him in so many ways.

Hey, Ohio State could use some help coaching the defense. I'm just saying.
