LB Tommy ‘Two Thumbs’ Eichenberg (Rose Bowl Def MVP, All B1G, All-American)

At times throughout the season, Eichenberg had his critics. He was a starter to begin the year but eventually lost his job to sophomore Cody Simon. While he still played, it wasn’t always to the level expected by Buckeye fans.

“If there’s one guy who doesn’t pay attention to that stuff, it’s Tommy,” converted linebacker Cade Stover said after the game. “He’s a nose to the grindstone type of guy, just works his ass off all the time. He’s the exact kind of guy you want on your football team.”

Not Tommy's fault they had him in jacked up coverages ala Tuf Borland. I'm betting on all that BS to be gone now with the new staff. Let's see what he can really do

I do think that the new staff will make a difference, the question is just how much of a difference? I'm hoping "Silver Bullet" difference; however, maybe that is expecting too much (i.e. isn't realistic).

TOMMY EICHENBERG AND STEELE CHAMBERS “SOLIDIFYING” THEMSELVES AS OHIO STATE’S TOP TWO LINEBACKERS
Dating back to the spring, all indications have been Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers are in line to be Ohio State’s starting linebackers this year.

Based on what Jim Knowles said after Ohio State’s fifth practice of the spring on Tuesday, it appears Chambers and Eichenberg have separated themselves from the competition.

While issuing a rundown of how the defense has performed so far in camp after practice on Tuesday, Knowles identified Eichenberg and Chambers as the Buckeyes’ top two linebackers. He also named Cody Simon, Teradja Mitchell, Chip Trayanum, C.J. Hicks and Palaie Gaoteote as linebackers who are also pushing for playing time, though he suggested he still has more questions about those linebackers than he does the top two.

“Tommy and Steele have been really solidifying things at linebacker,” Knowles said. “I like Cody and Teradja mixing in and Chip and C.J. And EA’s been kind of a float-around guy for us. I feel like we have potential there for depth, but still developing.”

Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg were fixtures in the first-team defense at linebacker

Players who took first-team reps with the punting unit included Mitch Rossi, Mitchell, Eichenberg, Chambers, Xavier Johnson, Kourt Williams, Fleming, Smith-Njigba, Gee Scott Jr., Cade Stover and Bennett Christian

  • Eichenberg shined for much of the morning as the projected first-team Mike linebacker routinely found himself deep in the Buckeye backfield to blow plays up at several stages of practice. During the sequence in which Ohio State specifically focused on running the ball prior to 7-on-7 work, Eichenberg was especially juiced up after stopping Miyan Williams behind the line of scrimmage for a tackle for loss.

I think the Rose Bowl really ignited something in Tommy. Woke up all those badass LB instincts that were trying to come out. Reminds me of Wilhelm a little bit if a step slower.
Did something ignite him, or did Matt Barnes simplify his assignment, and just let him off the leash and tell him seek and destroy?
