LB Tuf Borland (3x Captain, 2021 Sugar Bowl Def POG)

Yeah, I’m not sure what people are seeing if we’re talking about performance. I’ve watched the film and he was batting cleanup when he wasn’t being blocked to oblivion from what I saw. He was recorded as having two solo tackles and I’m struggling to remember one.

Tuf graded out as a Champion, so you’d think the coaches like what they see... but 19 others graded the same, so who knows. Hard to throw a captain at LB (probably making calls) under the bus after shutting Wisconsin’s offense and Heisman candidate RB down?

He gets there, but sometimes struggles to finish the play off and and get the guy to the ground. The defense has been swarming to the ball and gang-tackling all season, which has masked some of his mistakes that would have gone for much bigger gains last year. There weren't a lot of missed tackles in the Wiscy game but he had his hand in the few I saw.

I'm not going to crush him bc he's been a great Buckeye on and off the field, but I think we can all agree he has his limitations and is one of the few liabilities you can point to on this defense, especially when he's put in situations where he has to cover speed in space. We have yet to play a very good offense that can exploit it consistently but it's coming down the road. Hope it doesn't burn us.

Amazing how much better the players look when the staff installs a system that highlights their strengths and mitigates their weaknesses.

I mean, as opposed to playing Cover-0 for 70 snaps and asking your MLB on one leg to cover Rondale Moore in the slot.

Yeah, I thought Tuf played an excellent game. It was great to see. Definitely going to go back and watch it again, but I was pumped to see him get a sack and playing with a lot of heart. Kid was balling!

UNDERRATED THINGS

Tuf Borland

Borland is a microcosm of Ohio State's defensive unit as a whole. Last year, Borland was much maligned and scapegoated for his poor play. This year, he has turned it around, and done so really kind of quietly.

After a sack and a team-leading five tackles yesterday in limited time (due to the starters being pulled after halftime), Borland has established himself as a really good player on a really good unit. And it has been a welcome sign for the Buckeyes.

“[Borland] played his tail off,” Ohio State linebackers coach Al Washington said. “He was instrumental to us and our success. Incredibly instrumental. He was one of the anchors. You talk about trust? I mean, I trust him — dare I say it — with my life. Out there on the field, I trust him tremendously. He played well, and he’s also a guy who will tell you there are things to work on, and he’s getting better.

“He’s an adult, he’s very mature — it’s hard to put into words. He meets like a coach, we watch film and he’s like an extension of a coach. It’s very comforting, because he’s also a guy who can lead and show young guys how to conduct their business because he’s been there.”
