LB Tuf Borland (3x Captain, 2021 Sugar Bowl Def POG)

RE:????? I was a little lost too since nobody bothered to post an article or even surmise what Urban said.

Looks like Tuf is out for spring practice in it’s entirety with an Achilles.

URBAN MEYER HOPES TUF BORLAND RETURNS BY SEPTEMBER

92196_h.jpg

Achilles injuries are the bane of any athlete. When presumed Ohio State starting middle linebacker Tuf Borland suffered one early last week, head coach Urban Meyer said he didn't believe the season would be at risk.

Speaking at his press conference following Monday's practice, Meyer clarified the time table, saying it's likely Borland won't return until September. The Buckeyes kickoff the season Sept. 1 against Oregon State in the Horseshoe.

"The normal guy takes longer than a guy like him, so we're anticipating September," Meyer said.

While that wouldn't necessarily cost Borland the season, it could jeopardize his standing in the linebacker room if the injury causes him to miss a majority of spring drills and the entirety of fall camp.

Sophomore linebacker Baron Browning, Borland's replacement in the middle, drew praise for his performance during the weekend's scrimmage.

URBAN MEYER EXPECTS TUF BORLAND TO PLAY THIS SEASON AFTER SUFFERING ACHILLES INJURY IN THE SPRING

94586_h.jpg

Tuf Borland's rehab is coming along and should be able to return this fall, Urban Meyer announced at his Big Ten Media Days press conference on Tuesday.

Meyer said Borland is "doing great" and that the starting middle linebacker is "on course to perform this fall" after sustaining an Achilles injury in March.

Before the injury, Borland was Ohio State's lone returning starter at linebacker. Borland worked his way into the starting lineup last season after an injury to Chris Worley, and remained there throughout the season with Worley sliding to an outside linebacker position upon his return.

Borland finished fourth on the time with 58 tackles last season while also had 3.5 tackles for a loss and a sack.

Despite the progress, Borland is still not expected to be ready for the start of the season, meaning middle linebacker duties will likely fall either to redshirt junior Justin Hilliard or sophomore Baron Browning, both former five-star recruits.

OHIO STATE LINEBACKER TUF BORLAND: “I'M READY TO GO”

95791_h_0.jpg

According to sophomore captain Tuf Borland, he's ready to line up at linebacker for Ohio State.

After working his way into the Buckeyes' starting lineup as a freshman and finishing the season with 58 tackles — fourth most on the team — Borland suffered a setback this past March when he suffered an Achilles injury.

"It happened pretty early on in the spring on a pretty normal play," Borland said. "Thanks to the training staff and the coaches, I'm ready to go."

Over the summer, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said Borland was "doing great" and that the middle linebacker is "on course to perform this fall."

Borland backed up those claims Monday evening at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

"I'm ready to go," he said. "No doubt it's hard being out all of spring and the majority of the summer. But like I said before, coming in here everyday and seeing how these guys go about their business, it's really kind of motivated me and inspired me."

Will the Buckeyes Have Tuf Borland on the Field Saturday?

17-10-14-FB-0059-DH-1170x780.jpg

Urban Meyer said it back in the spring when it happened, Ohio State middle linebacker Tuf Borland may have suffered an Achilles tendon injury, but the expectations were that he would return sooner rather than later.

“He’s a little bit like J.T. Barrett, you say he’s out for a while, but he’s not going to be out for that long,” Meyer said.

Borland suffered his Achilles injury on a normal play, which he called “just kind of a freak play.” Since then, he has been working tirelessly with OSU’s rehab team and strength coaches in the hopes of having him ready to go against Oregon State.

For most players, there’d be no point in such a lofty goal, but Borland’s capacity for recovery is clearly different than most players.

He was jogging on the very first day of fall camp and has been active throughout, but not necessarily full go.

Only in the last few days has he been working in team drills.

If there is a question as to how long after Borland is cleared will he be ready, Meyer also said back in Chicago at Big Ten Media Days that once Borland is cleared, he’ll be ready and prepared enough to be back on the field immediately.

So is Borland ready right now?

“I’m ready to go,” the redshirt sophomore linebacker said on Tuesday.

He repeated it several more times throughout his 10 minutes with the media.

Borland feeling ready is only one part of the equation, however. There is still the matter of the medical staff and the coaches who have to decide whether or not there is too much risk involved in playing him this early.

But then there is also the allure of having him back on the field now because of what he does for the defense and the team as a whole. Keep in mind, he is a team captain as a redshirt sophomore. That’s a pretty exclusive club, which includes the aforementioned and fellow miracle healer, J.T. Barrett.

“He may be back this week. It’s amazing the way he has rehabbed,” defensive coordinator Greg Schiano said on Monday. “The job that our people in the training room, our medical people have handled him, the way Coach Mick [Marotti] has handled him, and more important than any of that is the way that Tuf is such a committed young man to what he’s doing. And he’s made incredible progress.

“As a coach and as a father I kind of am hesitant, because that’s a serious injury, as you know. But you have to trust the medical people and if they say he can go — so we’ll see by the end of the week we’ll figure out what he can and can’t do or what he should or shouldn’t do. But he’s ahead of schedule, well ahead of schedule.”

SKULL SESSION: OHIO STATE'S DOMINATING DEFENSIVE LINE, DWAYNE HASKINS' TIGHT END DAYS, AND TUF BORLAND'S NAME CHAN

HANDFIGHTING JARRED BORLAND.
Tuf Borland is a relentless monster on the football field, and a lot of that has to do with his ability to use his hands – a skill he's been honing since eighth grade.

Borland has been training with four-time blackbelt and 30-year professional martial artist John Greenidge since eighth grade to improve his athletic performance, and I'd say the results speak for themselves.

From Bill Landis of Cleveland.com:

"The hand fighting we do is how to fight in a closet, or in a phone booth," Greenidge said. "What we taught is that for somebody to be able to control you, they have to reach out and touch you. As soon as someone touches you, they are at a longer lever and I'm at a shorter lever. That means I'll have more power over them. Your body is basically a bunch of levers."

No, Borland is not also a secret black belt. He never took up martial arts outside of this work with Greenidge.

But you see some of the skill in how Borland plays. How, for an undersized middle linebacker at 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds, he's adept at using his hands to shed blocks from offensive linemen much larger than he is, and how he moves his body into the right gaps to plug up running lanes.

Landis also found the source of Tuf's unique – yet fitting – first name. His first name used to be Jarred and his middle name Tuf, with his parents always calling him the latter. But then the first name left.

But his grade school teachers refused to call him "Tuf" out of fear that it might incite other students to pick on, or worse, try to fight the tuf guy. Tuf decided he wasn't going to give them a choice, and around the time he was in fifth grade he persuaded his parents to legally drop the Jarred.

Tuf is a fantastic, extremely middle linebacker name. His fifth-grade self made the correct choice and I'm sure his current self thanks him for it.
