Legal Opinion - golf clubs stolen at golf course

BuckStocksHere

Semper Fi!
So I was in Las Vegas and had my entire bag of clubs stolen after my round. After we finished, put them at the bag drop area between the pro shop and restaurant, went in to tally the score and drink a beer. Came out 15 minutes later and my bag was gone.

I not only lost all my clubs, but my wedding ring which personally was the biggest loss although not monetarily. I figure about 2k maybe 1,500. Who knows.

Question is: besides do I go to jail for using a sledghammer on the guys head if I ever find him, but - does the course have any responsiblity at all?
They said they didn't have any security cameras. They have signs posted like everyone else, but I can't see how they can go blameless either. Heck, the employees could steal everything and they could just say "i'm sorry - we aren't responsible"? That doesn't seem fair.

Anyone have any idea on this... ?

Life isn't fair.

Signs will only stop those that WANT to pay attention to them. Don't leave anything valuable where scumbags can take it from you.

That's unfortunate..You would think that other golfers would have enough respect not to take someones clubs. I would contact the company who manages the course and see what happens. But more than likely it's like having your car broken into at the mall, It's your problem and they won't do anything to help you.

Or you could just wait until you get home make a police report and claim it on your homeowners insurance. (Say they were stolen out of your garage)

I used to work at golf courses when I was in high school and some in college. I've only seen 1 or 2 bags stolen in the 4 years I worked at courses. Sucks and sorry. Sometimes someone will just be drunk and take the wrong bag. They then call the course back and hand back the bag when they realize the mistake they've made. Sometimes the guy washing the golf clubs accidentally loads the wrong set of clubs into someones trunk without the owner knowing. Hopefully that's the situation and you will get it back.

If the golf course is ran by nice people, they might offer to sell you a new set of clubs at cost or give you a free golf bag or something to make you feel a little better about your loss. The golf courses usually have signs stating not to leave your bag unattended and that missing items aren't their problem, but they usually help you out in these scenarios.

When was the bag taken and did you leave your name and # with the golf shop in case someone does bring the bag back?

I've probably seen about 8 bags be taken by accident and returned within a few days.

That is just totally wrong and I am sorry to hear about it....As someone mentioned you might want to go back and see if someone just happens to show up with your clubs at the same course. My guess is it might be someone familiar with the course.

Buddy of mine had his stolen off of his cart while he went in to take a leak between holes 9 and 10 at the Phoenix in Columbus.

He found them an hour later at Play it Again Sports and the meth head had already sold them for money.

Even though the bag had his wallet inside of it, he still had to buy his own clubs back for $300.

You're screwed.

Seems like the guy should have called the local police department to report the store for knowingly dealing stolen goods, since they were making the guy par for them and his wallet was in the bag.

He called the police they said that legally there was nothing they could do b/c the store can't just give the clubs back b/c criminals could scam the store out of tons of money by having one guy selling the clubs and then his cronie partner coming in and getting the clubs back for nothing and then running that scam on multiple stores.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. Never really thought about that.

Good point.
