A Russian jet carrying a top ice hockey team crashed while taking off Wednesday in western Russia, killing at least 43 people and leaving two others critically injured, officials said.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said the Yak-42 plane crashed immediately after leaving an airport near the city of Yaroslavl, on the Volga River about 150 miles northeast of Moscow.

The ministry said the plane was carrying 45 people, including the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team, and all but two of those on board were killed.

Officials said Russian player Alexander Galimov survived the crash along with a crewmember. Galimov was in critical condition with burns over 90 percent of his body, a doctor at the hospital said.

Names I recognized.. Pavol Demitra, Karlis Skrastins, Stefan Liv, Brad McRimmon, Alex Vasyunov, Josef Vasicek, Karel Rachunek, Jan Marek. Ruslan Salei is on the team, but I haven't seen his name in any of the reports. Hopefully he wasn't on the plane.

RIP

Man that is horrible. I remember Demitra used to be damn good with the Blues and Salei played with the redwings this past season. Russia is actually reporting that he was on the plane. Still not confirmed. Also Brad McCrimmon was on that plane. He was a coach with the redwings and just took the head coaching position for Lokomotiv. RIP guys
