Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

Florida is losing some depth at quarterback, as Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, a redshirt freshman, announced on Tuesday that he would enter the transfer portal.

It became clear after spring practice that Del Rio-Wilson was the third quarterback for the Gators. Anthony Richardson and sophomore backup Jack Miller were clearly ahead of him on the depth chart. Del Rio-Wilson saw limited action near the end of the spring game.

NCAA: Only 54% of FBS players who entered portal enrolled at new school

In a move to provide more transparency with regard to the transfer portal, the NCAA released statistics and information for the years 2020 and 2021 that shows only 54% of FBS players who entered the portal enrolled at a new school.

During the two-year period shown in the infographics provided by the NCAA, 5% of student-athletes who entered the portal withdrew their name, while 41% remained active in the transfer portal. The data shows an increase of more than 950 FBS players entering to the portal from August 2019-July 2020 (1,583) to August 2020-July 2021 (2,539). The NCAA has seen the most active months coming in December and January, with 38% of the 2021 entrants coming in those two months.

The transfer portal has become more popular since the NCAA has allowed student-athletes a one-time transfer without penalty, which is backed up by the numbers on the NCAA site.

I wonder if this is a blessing and a curse. These guys are allowed to get NIL money but how many are going to end up being college drop outs when other schools don't pick them up in the portal. Those are numbers to watch and I hope it doesnt end up hurting more than it helps.

I still think the biggest risk overall will come in the form of kids under the age of 21, for the most part, being introduced to the world of adult levels of money, taxes, hangers on, cheats and the IRS well before they are ready.
