The Los Angeles Chargers are going through a massive change within the franchise after the firing of head coach Anthony Lynn and the hiring of new head coach Brandon Staley. But while change usually brings good things, it’s not perfect for everyone. Star defensive end Joey Bosa admitted to ESPN that the transition to this new system with the Chargers has not been easy.

“It’s been tough for me the last couple of days,” Bosa said, according to ESPN. “But it’s an adjustment. There’s a lot more to this defense than I’ve ever been part of before.”

The defensive system is led by both Staley and defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill. Staley might not be directly in charge of the defense as a head coach, but he has been on the defensive side of the ball for his entire career and was recently a defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. It was his first NFL coordinator spot of his career.

If Bosa isn’t able to figure out the defensive system and adjust to his new coach, it would obviously be a major issue for a defense that is largely centered around him. But Staley doesn’t have any concerns about Bosa making the transition.

“The thing that he does best is rush the passer,” Staley said, according to ESPN. “You can see why he is such a premium rusher when you’re around him in person, with his hands, his quickness. His ability to process quickly on the move. ... We’re certainly still learning him and he’s learning us. Hopefully through training camp, we can really figure out exactly where that sweet spot is for him.”
