Los Angeles Dodgers (7x World Series Champions)

In case you didn't know:

Babe Ruth Makes Coaching Debut With Brooklyn

babe-ruth.jpg

After a storied career spent primarily with the New York Yankees, famed slugger Babe Ruth made his coaching debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on June 19, 1938. He was hired by Dodgers executive vice president Larry MacPhail to coach first base and hopefully light a spark for the team.

The Dodgers were a subpar 22-31 when Ruth signed his contract on June 18 of that year, and were struggling to draw fans in a competitive market that included the Yankees and Giants. Ruth had largely remained out of the public spotlight upon retiring after the 1935 season.

He had visions of becoming manager of the Yankees but was passed over as player-manager in favor of Joe McCarthy ahead of the 1931 season. Ruth made his coaching debut with a doubleheader but his overall time with the Dodgers was largely unassuming.

Anecdotes detail Ruth’s interest in relaying signs as non-existent. He was ejected from an August game due to arguing a call with a first-base umpire.

Ruth’s arrival did improve attendance but the team’s play largely remained the same. They went 47-49 after he joined the coaching staff and finished 11 games below .500. Brooklyn went 16-13 in July, which was just one of two winning months that season.

Off the field there was the infamous scuffle between Ruth and team captain Leo Durocher who was being groomed to replace Burleigh Grimes as manager. Tension between the two dated back to their time as teammates on the Yankees.

Their dispute while with the Dodgers is believed to have stemmed from Ruth calling a hit-and-run with Durocher at the plate. Although Durocher delivered a game-winning hit, he was upset with Ruth’s call in extra innings.

When Durocher was named manager of the Dodgers ahead of the 1939 season, he predictably did not include Ruth on his coaching staff. Although Ruth’s time with the Dodgers was short-lived, the club remembered it by releasing a bobblehead in his honor during the 2014 season.

Well good luck beating the Dodgers

Trevor Bauer signing with Los Angeles Dodgers, set to be MLB's top earner in 2021, '22, sources say

Trevor Bauer, the 2020 National League Cy Young Award winner, has agreed to join the Los Angeles Dodgers, with the California native announcing his move in a YouTube video Friday.

Bauer and the Dodgers are in agreement on a three-year, $102 million deal that has opt-outs after Years 1 and 2, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan. Bauer is set to make $40 million in 2021 and $45 million in 2022, sources said.
.
.
.
Bauer joins a Dodgers rotation that was one of the best in the majors in 2020 and now has three former Cy Young winners in Bauer, Clayton Kershaw and David Price. Last season, the Dodgers ranked first in WHIP and second in ERA, opponent's batting average and opponent's OPS.

Thread title needs updated as they have seven WS titles now. That they only have 2 more than the Pirates seems odd.

Some are calling on the Dodgers to cut Trevor Bauer. I doubt they will do that, as their track record as an organization is to do everything they can to win. I expect they will let the investigation be completed by the MLB and legal system, but they won't cut Bauer so long as there is a chance he comes back to them in the near future.

Majority of Dodgers players do not want Trevor Bauer to rejoin team, per report

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times says many Dodgers players do not want Bauer back. From DiGiovanna:

Bauer's career is in jeopardy, and his stay with the Dodgers could be over, the sexual-assault allegations having turned a pitcher in his prime into a pariah in his own clubhouse, where no teammate has spoken publicly about him or come to his defense. Two people with knowledge of Dodgers clubhouse dynamics, who are unauthorized to speak publicly about the situation, said that a majority of players do not want Bauer back under any circumstances.

The Dodgers signed Bauer to a three-year, $102 million contract with multiple opt-outs this past offseason. Under the domestic violence policy, the Dodgers can not release Bauer until the investigation is complete and he serves any discipline. If the team does release him at some point, they would still own him the balance of his contract.

Why would Bauer opt out of a guaranteed $32M in both 2022 and 2023 (unless he is assured of getting more from another team which is highly unlikely now)?

He wouldn't. Clearly there is a contract that is tying Bauer to LAD for a lot of money. Only way LAD moves on from him anytime soon is if they can be relieved of having to pay him the rest of his contract. It's easy to be a moralist when it doesn't cost you any money.

Bauer's victim publicly released photos showing her facial bruising and black eyes. I find it hard to see Bauer getting off the hook here. He should know better than to batter a woman with his career and everything at stake. I know his defense is she asked for it ... well, that doesn't mean you actually do it. People ask for a lot of things that are unrealistic, and that doesn't mean you are allowed to throw all logic and reason out the window in order to fulfill their request. If you seriously hurt someone, that's on you.

My, then, teenage cousin who was neither rich, nor famous, declined a request like that from a chick in the heat of passion.

If that dumb motherfucker knows enough to stay out of trouble at that age with a rager going, then I have no sympathy for an older rich and famous dude if it was consensual or not.

Trevor Bauer Reportedly Won't Opt out of Final 2 Years, $64M on Dodgers Contract

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer reportedly will not opt out of the final two years and $64 million on his contract with the team, according to the MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

Even though they were fresh off winning a World Series, the Dodgers spared no expense to sign the best pitcher on the free-agent market last winter, giving Bauer a three-year, $102 million deal.

The agreement provided him with player options for next year and 2023.

Well, that's a no brainer. Has anyone on a MLB team ever been on paid administrative leave for 2½ seasons?.....

Los Angeles Dodgers' Trevor Bauer files lawsuit vs. woman who accused him of sexual assault

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer filed suit Monday against the San Diego woman who accused him of sexual assault, claiming defamation and tortious interference while seeking unspecified monetary and punitive damages.

In the suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Bauer's attorneys say that the woman "fabricated allegations of sexual assault," "pursued bogus criminal and civil actions," "made false and malicious statements" and "generated a media blitz based on her lies" in an effort to "destroy" Bauer's reputation, "garner attention for herself" and "extract millions of dollars."

In a petition seeking a domestic violence restraining order (DVRO) that was filed on June 29, 2021, the woman -- whom ESPN has chosen not to name -- stated that Bauer took consensual rough sex too far during two encounters at his Pasadena, California, home in April and May 2021, alleging that he choked her unconscious on multiple occasions, sodomized her without consent and punched her all over her body, leaving her with injuries that prompted medical attention.

Well, he's still and administrative leave and still getting paid $32M per year (unless he opts out, which isn't very likely.....).

Dodgers' Trevor Bauer reinstated after suspension cut to 194 games

Trevor Bauer's initial 324-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy has been reduced to 194 games by an arbitrator, the league announced Thursday, ending a seven-month grievance process and bringing some clarity to a saga that has been unfolding for the past year and a half.

Bauer has served only 144 games of his suspension, but arbitrator Martin Scheinman ruled that he is eligible to be reinstated immediately, essentially giving him credit for the time he served on MLB's restricted list in the second half of the 2021 season. Bauer, however, will be docked his pay from the Los Angeles Dodgers through the first 50 games of the 2023 season to make up the difference.

The Dodgers have 14 days to decide whether they will reinstate him onto their 40-man roster. The team released a short statement Thursday night that read: "We have just been informed of the arbitrator's ruling and will comment as soon as practical."

Bauer, as part of a tweet, wrote: "Can't wait to see y'all out at a stadium soon!"
