Low Carb Mania..A Fad or Here to Stay?

Time after time I am hearing physicians talk about lowering their LDLs after starting Atkins but the long-term effects are what I am curious about....on the other hand I think the low carb thing would be good at reducing the type 2 diabetes that is becoming more and more common in the elderly (and middle-aged).

Mili: nailed that point about the light beers, I wish I could get in better shape on a beer diet!

The disadvantage of body for life is the cost of Myoplex. Is this guy marketing for EAS nutrition?

The guy is not marketing for EAS, he is one of the owners of the company. I don't buy their stuff as it is insanely expensive and I am not trying to be a bodybuilder. I just go to the local GNC and they have similar products.

Another note. If you do some research on EAS you will find some information that one of the partners is a convict who was in prison for selling steroids. Oops.

I have to admit. I enjoyed reading the South Beach Diet book just for some of the medical information that was shared. Interesting stuff. Weird diet, but interesting information shared by the author.

Oh8ch - If you have the time, I would suggest hiking to the top of Humphrey's Peak. It is close to the Grand Canton, just north of Flagstaff, it is the highest point in AZ., elevation circa 12,500 ft. Fairly easy to hike to the top (2-3 hours), you pass through many environment zones (the last one is tundra), and from the top you can see 4 National Parks: Grand Canyon, Painted Desert/Petrified Forest, Bryce Canyon, and Zion Canyon. (If you do this hike, you may notice lower oxygen levels the last 500 ft. or so.)

Also, if time permits, I would suggest the Oak Creek Canyon drive from Flagstaff to Sedona. Consistently rated one of the Top 5 scenic drives in the country. On the drive, a stop at Slide Rock State Park (I believe that is the name) is worthwhile. It is a natural water slide that is pretty neat.

Yeah, great suggestions. I was in Sedona a few Junes ago and was unable to hike either of those because of the fire hazard conditions. Oak Creek Canyon is great.

My wife and I tried the South Beach Diet a few months ago and it worked for us to a point. She's pregnant now so she is off the diet. Going through the first few weeks did give me enough energy to start working out on a regular basis. Tae Bo a few times a week and I also bought a total gym (Thanks Chuck Norris!! :lift: ). I cut way back on bread, pasta and things like that but I still have some once a week or so. While I'm not on an "official diet", it did help me change my eating habits for the better.

I've found that when I go to the gym and do my routine, I'm not very hungry and my energy level is up... the only problem is after a while, I feel so good, that I figure I can skip the gym every now and them...

I'm going to start back up soon (the only prob. is I have a trainer that puts my routine together... it is long, and I sometimes just don't want to go in and put in the time in the evening)...

it would seem the higher cost of the wrap vice sandwich would more than offset the cost difference.
The tortillas that we use are very expensive and are the reason the cost/profit margin is so low. The owners are looking for cheaper tortillas but they thought it was important enough to come out with some low fat options right now rather than wait to find an inexpensive tortilla brand.

My wife and I started the diet on Jan. 4th and I have lost 50-55 lbs and she has lost about 35 lbs. Of course I started exercising then also, but the wife hasn't. For the last 6-8 weeks we've been eating "low carb" bread, pasta, and what ever else we can find. We come across a lot of people that tell us we'll gain it back, but my thoery is " I'll worry about keeping it off, after I lose it."

I know a lot of pizza places around us are wondering why their profits are down!

Yeah, I think the low carb diet's do work to take off the pounds. Of course, you'll only live to about 50 or so, as that is when you'll start having the major heart attacks and bypass surgeries. Ask the "inventor", Mr. Atkins himself.....oh, wait, he died of a heart attack.

Atkins does not help to lower your salts or cholesterol, it in fact usually makes it worse. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and clogged arteries will probably be quick to follow. The best diet, IMHO, is simply moderation. Quit eating seconds, and quit eating dessert. Eat healthier, and work out, even if it is only walking. Of course, I've been unable to make myself do any of the above, so probably the key is actually self-control.

Atkins death
Atkins suffered a severe head injury on April 8 after falling on an icy sidewalk while walking to work. Last April, Atkins was hospitalized for cardiac arrest, which he said was related to an infection of the heart and was not related to the diet.
Sounds like the old man was in denial before his death.

I too would highly recommend the Oak Creek Canyon drive. It's gorgeous! I did a four-day trip down the Canyon a few years ago. He did the Havasupai trail (saw Havasu Falls and Mooney Falls) -- that was a fabulous hike, but climb down the rock to Mooney Falls scared the shit out of me! I have some fabulous pics, if anyone is interested.

I had to run a half marathon the week after my trip, and my feet were pretty blistered up and didn't run a very good time. That wasn't very smart timing on my part!

I think any diet starts off great but is difficult to maintain.

Most Americans do little physical activity and are surrounded by super sized convenience foods. I think they have studied the Amish and Menonites who eat a diet high in protein and eggs but also in fruits and vegetables and they work sun up to sun down. They have little heart disease.

I also think Atkins got a bad wrap. People went over board on the protein and high fat end. What I believe he tried to say was that refined carbohydrates alter your blood sugar and lead to fat and weight gain. His take on protein and fats were that they were the foods that satiated you and caused you to stop eating as much. That is the similar premise of the South Beach Diet but I think they concentrate more on the glycemic index of foods.

The one thing that has always stuck in my mind is how do farmers fatten up cows, chickens and pigs? Feed them grain and pen them up.

Sounds like you'll need to change your monicker to MEDIUMJW
Losing 55 pounds in 5 months is pretty damn impressive. I've recently found out heart disease is fairly prevalent in my family so I've started walking my dog every day and I've lost weight while eating about the same as I did before. Low fat, low carb or whatever I still think the key in any weight loss program is exercise. Losing it that way probably increases the likelihood you'll keep the weight off as well.

BIGJW: we've been eating "low carb" bread, pasta, and what ever else we can find.

I've tried several low-carb pastas and they are they nastiest things I've ever eaten...tastes like wet cardboard. On the other side, I've tried a low-carb pizza mix by "Carb Sense" and you can make a pretty decent low-carb pizza with it. I use that mix, along with Atkins pasta sauce, fat-free mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni (the only "unhealthy" ingredient). I put a good amount of Italian seasoning into the dough mix to kick up the taste. While it's not Pizza Hut or Papa John's, it's still quite good.

FKAGobucks877: Ask the "inventor", Mr. Atkins himself.....oh, wait, he died of a heart attack.

The heart attack was a result of an infection he developed after his accident, and had absolutely nothing to do with his diet.
