Seahawks' LS Kevin Houser: Reminiscing About a Fellow High School Alum

Seattle Seahawks long snapper Kevin Houser is a fellow Westlake High School alum of mine and it was reported that on Monday, Dec. 21, he was in the hospital with a collapsed lung.

He sustained the injury on a punt coverage in the third quarter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Reports say that doctors were able to re-inflate his lung and that he is doing fine with his wife and kids visiting him to watch old episodes of the cartoon Ren & Stimpy .

I graduated with Houser from Westlake back in 1996, he was at the top of the popularity chain where as I was near the bottom, but one thing was certain with Houser and it was that he was easily the nicest guy in the entire class despite his athletic success and popularity.

Going back to elementary school, Houser was easily recognized because he was one of the largest kids in the school.

During recess, I remember gathering with Houser and other kids because we would always play touch-football in the far back field.

Since Houser was the largest and obviously strongest, he was always playing quarterback, and I swear even back then he could launch the ball 60+ yards down field.

I would always play one of the wide receivers because I was taller most of the kids and had decent speed.

There were several times when Houser would throw my way I would drop the ball even though I was wide open, beating my defender, but after getting some advice from Houser to better focus and catch the ball I easily scored multiple times back then.

Fast-forward to middle school and Houser was a starter on the football team, but I went a different way because my body did not gain weight and I was too scrawny to play.

Still, Houser was there after school hours in the cafeteria practicing his snaps over and over and over again.

I do recall hearing some of the kids giggling at him because of the stance a center has to take, but I never thought it was funny because being a football fan I silently appreciated Houser's focus and drive to get to play at the NFL level.

Houser was also a friend of mine, nothing too close like best friends, but good acquaintances.

I was over his (or a mutual friend's house, can't really remember) house several times and hung out, but once high school began, we went our separate ways via different groups of friend cliques.

Always one of the biggest guys on school grounds, Houser also had a very subtle and down to earth personality, never letting his accomplishments get to his head.

Following high school, Houser went to the Ohio State University where he played tight end and long snapper.

Kevin Houser sued by New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton over alleged scam
By David Hammer, The Times-Picayune
March 16, 2010

New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton and his wife are the latest to file suit in federal court against Kevin Houser, the team's former long snapper, alleging Houser was part of an investment scam that snared several Saints players and coaches.

The Paytons' suit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court, is nearly identical to one filed 10 days earlier by star tight end Jeremy Shockey and recently released defensive end Charles Grant. The only significant differences in wording are over details of the Paytons' specific purchases of film tax credits through Houser -- tax credits that never existed.

Houser was the longest-tenured Saints player when he was cut by the team before the 2009 season as news of the tax-credit fiasco emerged.

Payton and his wife, Elizabeth, say Houser, who was a licensed securities broker, convinced them they were buying state tax credits for Louisiana Film Studios, but later it turned out LFS had never applied for the credits.

The complaint says Sean Payton paid Houser $144,000, expecting to get $180,000 in state tax credits.

In all, nearly two dozen former or current Saints players and coaches, including quarterback Drew Brees and Saints legend Archie Manning, invested $1.7 million to buy what they thought were tax credits for the film studio project in Elmwood. Like Grant and Shockey's lawsuit before, the Paytons' lawsuit is labeled a class action on behalf of the rest of the investors.

Westlake grad Kevin Houser target of lawsuit by former New Orleans Saints teammates after investments turn sour

Kevin Houser, a Westlake graduate and former member of the New Orleans Saints, is being accused by several former teammates of leading them in late 2008 and early 2009 to buy a combined $1.9 million in Louisiana state income-tax credits they never got, according to court documents.

Kevin Houser, Westlake High class of '96, was the all-American cliche.

Three-sport star. Homecoming king. National Honor Society.

Classmates voted him "Best Personality" and "Most Likely to Succeed," the latter accompanied by a photo of him playfully clutching a wad of bills.

For his senior yearbook entry, Houser used a quote credited to Howard Cosell: "Stand for something. Don't quest for popularity at the expense of morality and ethics and honesty. Daniel Webster taught this country that what is popular is not always right, and what is right is not always popular."

At the moment, Houser, 32, who played football at Ohio State and spent 10 years in the NFL, all but one of them in New Orleans, isn't too popular with some of his former Saints teammates and coaches.

Head coach Sean Payton, Super Bowl MVP quarterback Drew Brees and retired Saints legend Archie Manning are among the current and former Saints who contend Houser, a licensed securities broker, led them in late 2008 and early 2009 to buy a combined $1.9 million in Louisiana state income-tax credits they never got, according to court documents.

The documents reveal that former Saints defensive end Charles Grant lost the most, $425,000. Former Saints punter Mitch Berger lost $250,000. Payton lost $144,000. Brees was out $100,000. Manning and mercurial Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey dropped $80,000 each.

Shockey was reportedly so peeved that he unloaded his disgust on his Twitter account: "thx chad houser our long snapper for losing my coaches, teamates, and me around 2mill$..what a dumb ass."

Grant, Shockey, Berger and Payton and his wife filed a civil lawsuit against Houser, citing unfair trade practices and unjust enrichment, among other claims. More plaintiffs could be added to the suit. (A request to try the case as a class action is pending.) No trial date has been set, although the cases could be heard later this year.

That Houser is tangled in such a mess is unthinkable to those who know him. Houser was advised by his lawyers not to speak on the record for this story.

"The Kevin Houser I know, that's not even in his makeup," said retired NFL center LeCharles Bentley, a teammate of Houser's at Ohio State and with the Saints.

I was up in Cleveland this weekend and read the whole article in the paper...it really sounds as if Houser was scammed and as a result his former teammates and coach lost money. I'm not a lawyer but it sounds like this Wayne Read character is the one everyone should be going after...

signed with Ravens....

New long snapper comes with controversy

The Ravens? new long snapper is known more for an off-the-field controversy.

Kevin Houser, who was signed by the Ravens on Wednesday to replace injured Morgan Cox, has been accused by former New Orleans Saints teammates and coaches that he led them to buy a combined $1.9 million in Louisiana state income-tax credits they never got in late 2008 and early 2009.

A trial date is set for November 2011.

Saints coach Sean Peyton and his wife along with two players have filed a civil lawsuit against Houser, citing unfair trade practices and unjust enrichment, among other claims.

New Orleans tight end Jeremy Shockey was so upset that he vented on his Twitter account: "thx chad [sp] houser our long snapper for losing my coaches, teamates, and me around 2mill$..what a dumb ass."

Houser made a brief appearance in the Ravens locker room Wednesday and answered a couple of questions before leaving.

"It's an honor and a privilege to be able to represent the team," Houser said. "The team has put itself in great position. I'm hoping to do whatever I can to help them reach the ultimate goal."

Houser, 33, played for the Saints from 2000 to 2008. He was with the Seattle Seahawks last season before going on injured reserve in December.

The Ravens selected Houser over Bryan Pittman, who failed his physical Wednesday.

"We really wanted a veteran," coach John Harbaugh said. "Those guys understand the schemes and have done the techniques and he should be ready to plug right in.?

Ravens have no regrets about signing Houser

The Ravens? newest addition, long snapper Kevin Houser, generated more news with his legal woes than his talent, but coach John Harbaugh said the coaches and players aren?t holding his off-field issues against him.

?It was discussed with him, and it?s in the past,? Harbaugh said Monday after the team?s 13-7 win against the Cincinnati Bengals. ?He took some good-natured ribbing, I think, from all of us, and that?s how we kind of cleaned the slate.?

Houser, who was signed on Wednesday to replace rookie Morgan Cox (torn anterior cruciate ligament in left knee), has been accused by former New Orleans Saints teammates and coaches that he led them to buy a combined $1.9 million in Louisiana state income-tax credits they never got in late 2008 and early 2009. A trial date is set for November 2011.

To be fair, Houser has also sued Wayne Read, the man who allegedly promised these tax credits, and may be a victim himself.

Houser has done his best to avoid the media, but Harbaugh said Houser played capably in his debut with the Ravens Sunday.

?He did a good job, and he did a good job with the protections,? Harbaugh said. ?They were coming after him. They got us with one little twist in there where they got pressure. Maybe he could have done a little better with that and maybe could?ve got a little more help. But I?m not surprised that for the first week, they came after him. But [punter] Sam [Koch] got it off. So he did well.?

Understanding the lonely job of the NFL long-snapper
Published: Wednesday, November 30, 2011

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The long snap -- like the long-snapper -- is invisible until it's botched.

Deposed long-snapper Ryan Pontbriand, after a nearly flawless Pro Bowl career with the Browns, got noticed and lost his job Monday.

"A lot of people think long-snapping is just bending over and throwing the ball between your legs," said NFL free agent Kevin Houser, a career long-snapper. It's not, which is why most centers don't double as long-snappers anymore (although Browns' coach Pat Shurmur handled both duties at Michigan State).

"It's a totally different animal," said Houser, a Westlake High School and Ohio State grad who long-snapped for New Orleans for nine years and briefly with Seattle and Baltimore.

Drew Brees suing former teammate Kevin Houser over tax credits
Posted by Mike Wilkening on June 10, 2013

Saints quarterback Drew Brees filed suit against former teammate Kevin Houser in federal court in New Orleans on Monday in connection with a failed tax credits plan.

The suit, of which PFT has obtained a copy, alleges that in 2008, Houser brokered the sale of Louisiana tax credits for Louisiana Film Studios, LLC to Brees, with the quarterback paying $160,000 for $200,000 in tax credits. However, the suit alleges the money was ?wasted, converted and dissipated by LFS and/or others.?

Houser, the suit alleges, did not inform Brees that he did received a commission on the sale of the tax credits. Also, Houser is alleged to have not disclosed that his construction company was owed money by the film company.

The suit also alleges the money for the tax credits went into the film company?s operating account, not escrow. What?s more, Houser is alleged to have known that the film company did not have the money to buy the film credits, which Houser ultimately ?has failed to deliver,? per the lawsuit.

The suit seeks ?full restitution? for Brees as well as other damages.

The Associated Press first reported news of Brees? lawsuit on Monday. The AP also reported that former Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs and tight end Jeremy Shockey settled with Houser Monday.

Houser, 35, was the Saints? long-snapper from 2001-08.
