Scout$--2012 Ohio DB has UM Ties (GBW)

Allen says tOSU is showing the most attention. He talks about his dad's days at Michigan, having an Uncle who coached at tOSU, and growing up as a Buckeye fan. Dad would like him to go to Michigan but will not force him.

Sam Webb did his to get some pro-Michigan comments from Allen but the Buckeye kept shining through.

Can we get back to Gant and quit rehashing the Justin Boren recruitment.

Southview's Gant ready for Buckeye camp
Still no favorites; Michigan also wants him

SYLVANIA, Ohio - Southview DB Allen Gant gets so many recruiting letters these days, that his sack holding them has ripped apart.

"Allen's got his own zip code, I think," said Jim Mayzes, Gant's high school coach. "He gets them from all over the place. So it's fun."

When Hardcore Sports caught up with the soon-to-be junior, Gant had just received correspondence from Syracuse and Wisconsin.

"I've been getting a lot of letters from around the Big Ten," Gant said. "But it's been mainly other schools around the country and other conferences, so it's been quite an experience to be getting all these letters."

Two Big Ten schools showing plenty of interest include Michigan and Ohio State. Gant visited Wolverines camp earlier on Tuesday and he'll be attending Ohio State's camp this weekend.

"It's very exciting," he said. "I'm excited to perform in front of lots of campers and lots of coaches

"I see it as a perfect opportunity for me to show the rest of Ohio and the rest of the country what I can do on the football field."

Gant grew up an Ohio State fan, but his family is split down the middle between Ohio State and Michigan. One of those family members, cousin Charles Woodson of NFL fame, won the Heisman Trophy with the Wolverines.

Overall, Gant lists no favorites. He lists education and opportunity as his main priorities, hoping to make an impact sooner rather than later.

However, his decision will come at just the opposite: later rather than sooner. Gant hopes to take time to evaluate all of his options before making a decision on the next step in what he hopes will be a bright future.

Sam Webb: Recruiting
Ex-Wolverine Tony Gant hopes son follows his footsteps to Ann Arbor

Twenty-eight years ago, an Ohio football star named Tony Gant spurned overtures from his home state Buckeyes, the Nittany Lions of Penn State, and a host of other big-time schools so he could become a Michigan Wolverine.

The hard-hitting safety prospect from Fremont (Ohio) Ross High School became a fixture in Bo Schembechler's defensive secondary from 1982-1986.

Fast forward to present day, and Gant's son Allen is also a rising football star. As the younger Gant heads into his junior season at Sylvania (Ohio) Southview High, a veritable who's-who of college football is hot on his trail. At the moment, none of those suitors sit atop his leaderboard, but one does hold the distinction of being his childhood favorite.

"It might sound surprising to people, but I'm actually a Buckeye fan and I root for Ohio State," Gant told Scout.com. "I've been a Buckeye ever since I was young, really. My uncle, Shawn Simms, coached at Ohio State under John Cooper and he played at Bowling Green. I wear all Buckeye gear and that's my team."

Receiving attention: Southview's Gant catches eyes of major colleges
By DONALD EMMONS BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Southview junior Allen Gant makes a catch against St. Francis. Many major colleges are recruiting Gant as a defensive back including Ohio State and Michigan, where his father played.
( THE BLADE/JEREMY WADSWORTH )

Southview's Allen Gant pulled in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Alex Pidcock as the final seconds of the first half of the 2008 Division II state championship game ticked off the clock.

But Gant, just a freshman then, caught more than just a touchdown that day to help the Cougars win the title.

He caught the attention of college coaches and recruiters in attendance who watched Southview take a 29-25 victory over defending champion Cincinnati Anderson.

Two years later, he receives letters and pamphlets daily from colleges and is regarded as one of Ohio's top junior football players.

?Because of Allen Gant I feel like I know the Tressel brothers pretty well,? Southview coach Jim Mayzes said, referring to Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel and his brother and assistant coach Dick Tressel.

Allen Gant was All-NLL first team defensive back last year, as well as a second-team wide receiver.

The Buckeyes are among the list of major programs that have shown interest in the 6-foot-1, 208-pound junior safety/wide receiver.

Michigan, which is where his father, Tony, played, also has the three-year starter on its radar. He's made trips to Columbus and Ann Arbor for unofficial visits.
But plenty of schools are in the mix.

?I get probably a dozen letters almost every day,? Allen Gant said."

On top of that, he can get plenty of tips from family and relatives, including former Michigan standout Charles Woodson, who is a cousin through marriage. Woodson, a Heisman Trophy winner, plays for Green Bay in the NFL.

?He just gave me advice about when the ball is in the air, you have to become the receiver and go for the ball,? said Allen.

Gant regularly watches videotape of his games with his father tocritique his performance.

?Allen's biggest asset is he's coachable,? Tony said. ?If you tell him the right things he will apply them. I teach him you have to make the tackles. Your job as a free safety is to prevent the touchdown.?

Gant still has plenty of time to decide his future.

?I want Allen to enjoy the whole recruiting process,? Tony said. ?It's a once-in-a-lifetime process. I just want him to sit back and enjoy it.?

Allen has picked up offers from Cincinnati, West Virginia, Ball State and Stanford while still getting heavy interest from Ohio State, Michigan, Northwestern, LSU, Iowa, Louisville and USC. He still has tOSU and Michigan as favorites and says distance will likely be a factor for him.
