vr,

Back on topic for the rational (us, not half-wit): you can't really think that someone going into the stands and swinging at someone they THINK threw something at them is anywhere close to defensible, do you? I mean, if Artest sees who does it for sure with his own eyes and charges after the guy, or someone is out on the court, OK, you have a point, but he was laying down completely, and could never have seen who it was. The bottom line to me is that if you throw punches at someone who has done nothing to you in any other context, you end up in jail for assault and get the crap sued out of you. Just because Artest can throw a ball in a hoop and he (thinks he) can rap, doesn't mean the penalty should be any different. The others I can say I have more sympathy for their situation once it all got started (O'Neal and Jackson), but I would think that suspending Artest until the All Star Break would be a fair penalty, in additon to the money he will lose to the league and the people he started cracking on and any possible criminal proceedings. He doesn't give a fuck alright, and you can't live your life like that without paying consequences if you aren't going to control yourdelf at all.

Oh my god. Per ESPN.com:

NBA Takes A Stand

The NBA responded harshly to the fight Friday in Detroit. Ron Artest will not play this year. Stephen Jackson will miss 30 games, Jermaine O'Neal 25, Ben Wallace six and Anthony Johnson five. Four others received one-game suspensions and fines.

Honestly, while I fully support the suspensions, and agree Artest is just a psycho seemingly looking for an excuse, I think the NBA-and possibly the NFL,MLB,etc., should re-evaluate their alocohol policies.

I am all for beer drinking, partying, etc. That said, people-including myself-sometimes do stupid things while intoxicated. I think the leagues should just ban the sale of beer at games. Will some people be pissed off-of course. That said, theorretically, you go to watch the game, not to drink overpriced BudLight or Miller. Someone who would pass up going to an NFL or NBA game because they cannot drink is someone who can easily be replaced by someone else-attendance would not suffer.
I admit that baseball is a different animal-I am not a huge baseball fan, and probably would not go see a Reds game if I couldn't have a couple of brews while watching the sloooooooooow pace of play. That said, I wouldn't be outraged if the Reds put in this policy, I just wouldn't go to a baseball game. I think baseball might be hurt by this, but the NBA and NFL-no way. Also, I think a lot more families would be inclined to bring their kids to games if they didn't have to worry about some drunk doing something offensive around their kids

Six for Ben Wallace? For what? Getting hit in the back of the head?

COMPLETELY RETARDED.

I don't think it's any secret that Wallace got his six games on behalf of the fans who threw stuff. That's the only reason anyone could justify a suspension for him.

Artest got what he deserved. Actually, his penalty was a little light, but it was acceptable. Jackson and O'Neal got slaps on the wrist.

Baseball-quite possibly-most teams don't get a sellout for most of the 81 homegames.

NFL,NBA-they can still have beer TV sponsorships, plus, the PR value might make it worth it, if these stupid incidents continue. Also, they could announce they are jacking up ticket prices by a buck, or hotdog prices by 50 cents to compensate. If they don't see a rise in families responding to the new atmosphere-bring back the brew-just talking theoretically here.

you've got to be a detroit fan.

this is absolute bullshit. why is it that because ron artest is wearing a basketball jersey when some ignorant fuckstick throws his beer cup at him, its OK and the worst the "fan" gets is ejected from the game? if he did this to artest at the bar later that night he wouldve gotten his ass handed to him and deservedly so. and you wouldnt be on here calling for his head. so what exactly is the difference?

i wish he woulve found the coward who threw it and rammed his head of the chair.

Why on earth would that chubby Pistons fan go on the court and challenge Artest? Artest had every right to light that guy up, Jermaine, I'm not so sure. I've got to give O'neal credit for one heck of a punch, even if it was a sucker punch.

First of all, O'Neal didn't hit the guy who ran on the court and tried to fight Artest. He hit someone else.

Further, it was a guy who was being helped up because he couldn't get up on his own.

Finally, he had a running start and nailed a guy who was already off balance.

Artest didn't "light" the chubby guy up. He threw three haymakers and none of them connected.
