Madison Square Garden Brawl

The word "thug" is one of the most overused and misunderstood labels...however, it is also exploited to generate interest whether it be positive or negative.

Unfortunately the word "thug" is embraced in the "hood" just like another word, but I even dare step into that pile of crap.

Suspensions are in from the NBA Office, per ESPN News:

Carmelo Anthony: 15 games
J.R. Smith: 10 games
Nate Robinson: 10 games
Mardy Collins: 6 games
Jared Jeffries: 4 games
Nene: 1 game (leaving bench)
Jerome James: 1 game (leaving bench)

Each team was fined $500,000.

Unknown if Isiah Thomas will get anything.

Proportionally, that is about correct. I was hoping Smith, Robinson and 'Melo would get at least 20, but overall, the league sent a strong message. Afterall, this wasn't nearly as bad as the Palace brawl.

I will be hoping to see the league come down hard on Isiah. Fuck him. Everything he touches turns into a steaming pile of mastadon dung.

Yeah, Isiah needs to be penalized for ordering that hit. These suspensions don't hurt New York at all, they aren't going anywhere, Denver on the other hand not having their star for 15 games is going to hurt them a lot.

How do you effectively penalize a team like the Knicks tho? They suck, they aren't getting any better nor do they appear to be making any real effort to compete with the rest of the league.

The NBA has some serious issues, and I don't know how they can repair that image. Making the kids stay in school for more years might help but I doubt it.

Getting back to the original post, being a Knick fan I have seen worse fights over the last ten years.

Anyone remember 1997 in the playoffs against Miami. The Knicks were up 3-1 in the series and due to all the suspentions they lost game seven. They could have beat the Bulls in the finals too.

IMO Collins foul was intentional but there have been harder fouls. Smith should have walked away. He should get the most games since he tackeled Robinson into the stands.

I think it's about fair, the NBA doesn't want the image of thugs brawling out on the court so they made it a point to cripple the teams. Denver will have to really push as they are in the 7th spot now, figure out of the 15 he's gone they will likely lose 8+.

This isn't as bad as the Artest in Detroit incident, I believe Jackson and Artest should have both been banned from the league. That was a different situation due to the players attacking the fans (customers) who are paying money to see them.

Results of an espn poll showing that most people think they were too lenient.

I am still curious as to why they didn't do anything to Isiah... I did like this question on the ESPN Poll.

9) What do you think of Isiah Thomas not drawing a fine or suspension?

51.7% Should have been suspended
29.0% Should have been fined
19.3% Right call

10) In the wake of the brawl and a 9-17 start, should the Knicks fire Thomas?

72.6% Yes
27.4% No

Not having anything to do with thier record, I think he should be released. Some of that for "putting a hit out" on Denver, but most of it has to do with the fact he has no control of that team. Similiar to Coker this season at Miami, it shows the inmates are running the asylum.

The only reason Carmelo got 15 and didn't get 20 games or more is because he had an open hand and not a closed fist for the punch

I thought that if Stern was going to be so tough on these suspensions he would have done something to Isiah....when the news media showed him lipping the words to 'Melo to not go to the basket...I surprised Stern didn't do anything...But you know Isiah was on the phone denying it

what about the knicks vs the suns way back in the day.

SD, all of the players from the NFL you listed are in trouble for events off the field. I think people are somewhat willing to ignore the things athletes do off the field, but when the thuggery is on the field right in front of the fans that makes it different. Just look at the opinion of everyone toward cryami. they get in brawls on the field and they are labeled thugs. As far as KWII and his cheap shots, he's just a douche bag (i'll give you thug even)

Ugliest moments in NBA history

Nov. 19, 2004: Indiana?s Ron Artest goes into the crowd after a beer is tossed on him. Nine players are suspended for more than 140 games in what is now known as the ?Malice at the Palace.?
Dec. 20, 2002: Golden State?s Chris Mills and Portland?s Bonzi Wells get into a fight after a Portland victory. Fans throw beer bottles at the Blazers as they leave the court. Mills tries to get into the Blazers? locker afterward, then gets a group of friends and parks his car in front of the Blazers? team bus. Mills was suspended for three games, Wells for two and Rasheed Wallace was fined.
April 30, 1998: New York?s Larry Johnson shoves Miami?s Alonzo Mourning with one second left in a first-round playoff game. Mourning responds by punching Johnson. As the players get into it, Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy clings to Mourning?s leg in an attempt to break up the fight.
May 14, 1997: Miami?s P.J. Brown slams New York guard Charlie Ward during a playoff game. Knicks Patrick Ewing, Allan Houston, Larry Johnson and John Starks all left the bench area and are hit with one-game suspensions, which are spread over the final two games of the series.
March 24, 1993: Phoenix?s Kevin Johnson punches New York?s Doc Rivers, which leads to a brawl. Knick Greg Anthony comes off the bench and starts punching Johnson.
March 26, 1991: Philadelphia?s Charles Barkley attempts to spit on a heckler and instead hits an 8-year old girl.
Apr. 20, 1990: Detroit?s Bill Laimbeer and Philadelphia?s Charles Barkley break out fighting during a playoff game in 1990. They were fined $20,000 dollars.
Apr. 24, 1983: Boston?s Danny Ainge takes an elbow from Atlanta center Tree Rollins in a first-round playoff game. Ainge tackles Rollins and Rollins bites Ainge?s finger.
Dec. 9, 1977: During a fight between the L.A. Lakers and the Houston Rockets, L.A.?s Kermit Washington punches Rudy Tomjanovich in the face. Tomjanovich was hospitalized for weeks with fractures to his face, while Washington was suspended 26 games, the longest suspension for on-court activity in NBA history until Ron Artest?s incident.
