Malik Zaire (QB Notre Dame, transfer to Florida Gators)

It was offense-defense scrimmage. Scoring was a bit strange.

Yeah, I wish they would go to a traditional scoring system, but for whatever reason and for as some time now they've been scoring the defense based on stops and turnovers. If I recall, the offense gets points every time they get first downs, which also inflates the scoreboard. The final score actually ended up being close at 63-58. This scrimmage was certainly all about the offense though. ND's new defensive coordinator kept things pretty bland on defense, based on what they've seen in practice, to keep from giving anything away prior to the season.

Malik ended up with 292 yards passing, going 18 for 25. He also had two passing TDs. His numbers were much better than Golson, but I think Golson faced most of the starting defense. Zaire looked great though, and he's much better at going through receiver progressions than Golson, it's like night and day. If Golson's first target isn't open, he seems content to take off running. I don't think Golson particularly runs the Zone Read that great either, I think Zaire understands it better. Zaire says the job will be his, even though it appears to be Golson's to lose. I think Zaire is just more consistent, and I like his confidence. Even if he doesn't win the job, I've got faith that he'll see meaningful reps this season. At least once every other game in 2012 the Irish saw Golson get banged up because of his size and dual threat nature, so I think it's only a matter of time before Zaire will get to show what he has.

Sitting at about 50 healthy players and kids that aren't redshirted, ND down 35 - 0 to USC in the 1st half. Golson was just benched, Malik scored his first college TD in 3 plays, one coming on a big pass to Chris Brown. Malik finished the drive with a 10 yard run. Exciting start to his career, great to see Malik finally get some playing time.

Out for the season. OUCH! Feel bad for the kid.

Just sayin': I don't like to see anybody get hurt/injured; however, it's part of the game. I don't remember hearing that Braxton Miller or JT Barrett got any sympathy cards from South Bend last year after they were injured. The only Notre Damer that I can honestly say I really felt bad for was Declan Sullivan (and his family).

Redshirt freshman DeShone Kizer will take over as the team's starting quarterback, Kelly said.

Did anyone see the replay? It was absolutely grotesque. Hope he heals up. I can't stand the Golden Domers but I hate to see a kid go down like that. Not to mention I think they would have covered if he hadn't got hurt. Damn and I never bet with ND, ever. WTF was I thinking?
