Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter Manny Ramirez is retiring.

Major League Baseball announced the move in a statement on Friday.

"Major League Baseball recently notified Manny Ramirez of an issue under Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the statement said. "Rather than continue with the process under the Program, Ramirez has informed MLB that he is retiring as an active player. If Ramirez seeks reinstatement in the future, the process under the Drug Program will be completed. MLB will not have any further comment on this matter."

The statement did not say whether Ramirez tested positive for a banned substance. He has previously served a 50-game suspension for violating the drug policy while he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ramirez was entering his 18th season in the majors. He played with the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Dodgers, Chicago White Sox and Rays. He has a .312 career batting average with 1,831 RBIs and 555 homers.

That's a huge break for TB. Manny was not going to produce this year ... that was wishful thinking. If they benched him then they'd have to deal with the Manny-being-Manny clubhouse cancer thing.

I think Maddon dodged a bullet.

Agreed, and it isn't like they haven't done this stupid shit before...I mean look at Tampa's track record for bat-suck over the hill sluggers over the years...McGriff, Canseco, Greg Vaughn, Sorrento, Gerald Williams, Al Martin, Tino Martinez...who wants to party like it's 1999!!!1!1!1!!! (or 1998, or 2000, or 2001, or...)

I don't know that Tampa Bay actually signed all those players though. A lot of them were just 65 year old guys that retired and moved to Florida like old people tend to do, and they happened to be good enough to crack the 25-man roster after open tryouts.

This makes me happy. I couldn't help but find myself liking the Rays less for having him (and Damon) on their team.

Which is weird, because I don't have a problem with Damon.

Damon is one hell of a ballplayer.

He's no longer an all star caliber player, but dude is gonna give you every thing he's got left in the tank every night.

Manny? Fuck him.
And up until his 1st failed test, I was a really big fan of his.

Finally.. a reason for the [Mark May]ty hair, [Mark May]ty goatee and stupidity on and off the field...

I'm sure he'll do OK smoking his weed and enjoying the tens of millions he has to have bagged.. He should call Ricky Williams (after Williams ends his career).. They can sit around a camp fire in the Keys and listen to Bob Marley tunes

Can't jump on bandwagon about his swing tho... that swing is textbook.. short.. compact.. arms extended... gets into the hitting zone right now... great wrists.. great hip turn... prototype
Looks like crap because he dresses like a slob with too baggy of a uniform... in an underarmour shirt, it'd look completely different... no wasted motion... head never moves...

And his throw is prototype... for a 4th grade softballer playing for St Mary's middle school...

Cubs blame Manny's PEDs for '08 sweep

Dodgers' Manny Ramirez at Wrigley during the 2008 NLDS. (Phil Velasquez, Chicago Tribune / October 1, 2008)

It was three years ago that Manny Ramirez led the Dodgers into the postseason, where they swept the Cubs in three games in the Division Series. That started a downfall from which the Cubs have yet to recover. Some in the Cubs organization believe Ramirez's admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs was instrumental in spoiling what could have been their dream season.
