Many Minority Women In Sciences Say They Have Been Mistaken For Cleaning Or Administrative Staff

MaxBuck

SoCal, Baby!
NBC News (7/8, Henry) reports on a study conducted by members of the UC Hastings College of the Law which found that “approximately half of Black and Latina women in the sciences say they have been mistaken for janitors and administrative staff.” The study was based on surveys from over 550 women in STEM fields. It also found that “77 percent of Blacks, 65 percent of Latinas and 64 percent of Asian Americans” said that they “felt like they had to continuously prove their competence and intelligence,” while “four-in-ten Asian American women said they felt pressured to perform a more stereotypically female role.”

Well, the bold part isn't a bad thing. I hope everyone feels that way.

Everytime I stop at Target after work when wearing an Ohio State polo, I get asked questions about where things are.

I buy the solid color cotton pique tennis shirt multipacks from American Apparel. I stopped wearing solid blue and red years ago after I realized if I went to either Target or Meijer, people would ask me for assistance.

This happened to me once, and the lady was in, you know whatever modest automotive/tools/accessories section they have asking about something for her car, so first, I helped her find what she needed, then I told her I didn't work there.

I dream of a day when no more feelings are hurt!! We have an epidemic of hurt feelings in this country. Please, please people. Just don't saying anything to anybody anymore. It just too dangerous. Studies show a feeling is hurt every 3 seconds in this country. We can stop this with your help. All you have to do is stop talking. It is that easy. Stop talking and a save a feeling...

To be honest though there are several women in my industry who have zero business being here.

Call it the unintended consequence of affirmative action or promoting more women in the workforce.

When you make hiring decisions based not on who is best for the job, you end up with poorly ran companies and a country and an economy like we have.

I honestly can think of only one woman in the PVC business worth a damn and I know just about everyone from all the major PVC companies, BASF, ExxonMobil, etc. Now I don't know anyone outside of sales and tech, but I do know thousands of people and while women and minorities aren't as prevalent in the industry as they are in the population, those who are in the industry are universally inept.

While speaking of women making sammiches and stop talking, both of which I support greatly, I am reminded of this great Chappelle bit.

For those unwilling or unable to listen to 8 great minutes, here is the joke paraphrased.

Women are messed up because they learn about men from women's magazines and they don't know what the fuck they are talking about.

The magazine will have an article with 100 ways to please your man.

Shit that list is four things long.

1. Suck my dick.
2. Play with the balls
3. Make me a sammich and
4. Don't talk so much

The problem here VG, is institutional hollywood racism... if only this scene was between Demond Wilson and Charo.

My great aunt was in that movie.

One of the things I collect are old plastics books, generally from the 50's to the 80s or so. Most modern books don't have as good of information in them for whatever reason. Anyway, I have been slowly getting them all autographed as I meet the authors in my office. Most all of them make some joke about this movie in their autograph session.
