Mark Snyder (Texas A&M Defensive Coordinator)

For the record Holiday was not offered the job and did not turn it down. The Marshall AD confirmed that on the local news. He pulled his name from consideration this morning. Some think this is because he most likely new someone else was getting the offer. Most of the Marshall crowd generally thinks that person is Mark Snyder. Many of our alumni have really been pushing for him since Day 1. The story about Holiday being offered the job was written by a WVU beat writer. Holiday was a long time WVU coach under Don Nehlen so he has ties to that community. I guess he did not confirm his story with the AD before releasing. It is probably down to Coach Snyder and Coach Larry Kueck who was our QB coach and is the current interim. Some are saying the deal may be done in a few days.

Best of luck to you guys.

Thank you for the kind welcome. FWIW there are a lot of Alumni who are speculating Snyder will be our new HC. Some internet posts this evening suggest things may be moving forward but that may be just message board rumbling! Who knows if it is credible. It is no secret how most of Marshall feels about Mark Snyder.

And by the way Buckzip. Akron won't continue to own Marshall. We are moving into CUSA! That game last year killed me........as did the game with OSU!

Here's an article about Holliday's withdrawal in the WV Gazette. I added the bold at the end, about there not being an offer extended.

University of Florida assistant coach John "Doc'' Holliday, a native of Hurricane, has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Marshall football coaching job, the Gazette learned Friday afternoon.

Holliday, who earlier indicated it was his job to turn down, will remain at Florida.

He met with head coach Urban Meyer and athletic director Jeremy Foley Friday morning. An announcement was expected from the school, possibly to announce a raise and title for Holliday.

"It was a tough decision,'' Holliday said. "It was a decision my wife and kids had to make. If I weren't at Florida, it would have been an easy decision. The timing just wasn't right.''

Ohio State assistant Mark Snyder and Marshall interim coach Larry Kueck remain in the hunt for the Herd job. Bob Pruett resigned last month after nine seasons at his alma mater. "Marshall is a great opportunity,'' Holliday said. "But at this time, after sitting down and talking [to Meyer and Foley], I realize we've got something special going on at Florida. I want to be part of it.''

Marshall athletic director Bob Marcum told WSAZ-TV that Holliday was not offered the job.

This reminds me of how "Jim Tressel is the only one we offered" quotes kept popping up in stories out of OSU during our last coaching search. It is possible that Holliday was never officially offered the job but I'd say it is more likely that he was unofficially offered and both he and the school are trying to save face for the Marshall program...he out of courtesy and they out of necessity. This is just like Jon Gruden, Mike Belotti, Bob Stoops, et al were "never offered" the OSU job. Even though all of them pulled their name out of the running, I still believe that any of them would have been hired over Tressel had any of them been willing to accept it.

Good luck to Mark Snyder, I hope he gets the job if that is what he wants to do. I'll be sorry to see him go, but I think that succession in the coaching ranks is just as key to recruiting great coaches as getting players to the NFL is to recruiting great players. If your younger assistants aren't moving up and then moving on, you have to question how good they really are.

I agree. I think everyone here agrees. We all want Mark Snyder to do what's right for Mark Snyder. But we all want whats best for tOSU, and we therefore want him to stay. We also want Santonio Holmes to stay for his senior year. And we would have wanted Orlando Pace and Shawn Springs and anyone else who left early for another year.

Thank God we got Tressel instead. :groove:

I jus don't wanna lose another DC.... thats a tough hit... Especially since our Defense played so well at the end of last year.

I agree. I could deal with losing Snyder, but the timing is what hurts. I truely feel we are set to make a run this year. If we bring in a DC from outside, I'm afraid the defense would be thinking too much. Right now, they are just reacting b/c they are so familiar with the defense.

That is why you have good assistants. The defense would not change next year. The defense is too seasoned for a new DC to come in here and change things around. Any good DC would recognize that. It will hurt if Snyder does leave but not as bad as everyone thinks.

Relax, JT knows what is going on and believe me the Defensive Assistant coaches do too.

I agree with what you are saying, but if an outside guy is brought in, it will be b/c he has a good record. An outside DC had his own formula...and it must be a good one or he wouldn't be considered for tOSU. I think the only way to keep continuity is to keep the DC position in house...or at least for this year.

He could, but I personally don't see that happening b/c HE would have to learn OUR system (therefor making him more of a student that a teacher). If an outside guy is hired, it is for his system which has obviosly worked or he wouldn't be hired to coach at tOSU. If the coaches are looking to stay with the same system, it would only make sense to promote from within.

However, there may be a coach out there that coaches a system that is very similar to ours, which would make the transition less difficult.
