Marshall players suspended for opener
Three to miss entire game, two out for half for unspecified violations
By ANTHONY HANSHEW - The Herald-Dispatch
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University defensive tackle Jamaal Whyce, sophomore defensive tackle Adrian Davis and junior defensive end Damarcus Thomas have been suspended for Saturday’s football season opener against Troy University for violations of team policy, football coach Bobby Pruett said.
In addition, defensive end Jonathan Goddard and junior running back Donte Newsome will not play in the first half against Troy for disciplinary reasons, said Pruett, who declined further comment.
Whyce and Goddard are senior starters on the Thundering Herd’s defensive front. Goddard had 68 tackles last season, including 20.5 for loss, and tied for team-high honors with 6.5 sacks. Whyce played in nine games in 2003, totaling 25 tackles.
Davis, Thomas and Newsome each are on Marshall’s two-deep roster.
Pruett’s announcement following Wednesday’s practice capped an eventful day for Goddard.
Last week, Goddard entered a not guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of battery on a police officer. Goddard’s original plea hearing was still on the Cabell County Magistrate Court docket on Wednesday, however, and when Goddard didn’t arrive for the 1:30 p.m. hearing, Magistrate Johnny McCallister issued an arrest warrant.
That warrant was rescinded after Goddard’s attorney arrived and explained that his client had already entered the plea before another magistrate. Goddard was arrested Aug. 22 following a large fight across from Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
The arrest of Goddard was not directly linked to the fight, Pruett has said.
Goddard is accused of shoving a police officer when the officer tried to pull him off a Huntington man, William Green, who was later arrested on drug and weapons charges.
The cause of the fight isn’t clear.
Ohio State defensive end Redgie Arden from Ironton was injured in the ruckus -- suffering a broken nose and other injuries to his face. Marshall and Ohio State play Sept. 11 in Columbus.
McCallister has not set a date for Goddard’s pretrial hearing.
With four defensive linemen not available for at least the first half, inexperienced players such as tackle Floyd Wright likely can expect added playing time. Wright is a 6-foot, 271-pound junior college transfer who joined the team in August.
"It’s been a pretty tough couple of weeks, but now I’m getting ready for Saturday," Wright said. "I’m going to have my childhood dream of playing Division I-A football come true.
"I’m not necessarily concerned about the size and strength of playing Division I-A, but the knowledge the other team has of playing at this level."
Marcus Hairston, a 6-3, 265-pound senior defensive lineman, will see time both at tackle and end. Hairston totaled 15 tackles in eight games last season.
