REPORT: MARYLAND TO FIRE RANDY EDSALL DURING TERPS' BYE WEEK

It's been a rough year for Randy Edsall's Maryland. The Terps sit at 2-3, which isn't that atrocious until you factor in their losses (including one to Bowling Green) happened to the score of 121-33.

Maryland is coming off a 28-0 manhandling at the hands of Michigan, and the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes are on deck. Yet, things inexplicably got worse for the fifth-year frontman.

According to Jeff Ermann of 247Sports.com, who spoke to "multiple sources close to the situation," Maryland plans to terminate Edsall's employment — barring a "an unexpected last-minute reversal" — during Maryland's bye week, which occurs next week.

Edsall's record at Maryland currently sits at 22-33.

He just signed a new contract this summer:

Randy Edsall signs three-year contract extension to coach Maryland football

Maryland football Coach Randy Edsall has agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension through the 2019 season, the school announced on Tuesday.

The extension signifies a continued commitment to Edsall, who will receive a $71,000 raise in each of the final two years of the six-year contract he signed after taking over at Maryland in 2011. The three-year extension will be worth $7.5 million beginning in January 2017, though only $500,000 of that is guaranteed. That means the school would owe Edsall only $500,000 should his contract be terminated between January 2017 and January 2018, and nothing after that.

Should Edsall be fired prior to Jan. 15, 2017 – when his initial contract ends – the school would pay him a $2.6 million buyout ($2.1 million from his original contract with an additional $500,000 coming from his extension).

The "continued commitment" lasts all of 3 months (or 5 football games)......

And that's done...

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/13861002/randy-edsall-fired-maryland-terrapins-coach

After days of rumors and speculation, Maryland football coach Randy Edsall was fired Sunday after the Terrapins' third straight loss by at least three touchdowns.

"We appreciate Randy's tireless commitment to the University of Maryland," athletic director Kevin Anderson said in a statement. "This was a difficult decision, but ultimately this is the best course of action for our football program moving forward."

The move had been anticipated since reports came out last week that Edsall would be removed before the 2016 season. Maryland's lackluster performance created rumblings among many of the alumni and boosters who are being counted on to help fund a new indoor football facility that will cost a projected $155 million to build.

How does the University of Maryland justify signing a 3 year extension in the off season for a guy they fire 5 games into the season? What a waste of money.
This is a university who fired the ACC coach of the year, who had 6 winning seasons in 10 years at a program that had only 1 winning season in the decade before he was hired. Maryland has a history of doing dumb stuff.

Reports: Michigan DC D.J. Durkin a 'strong candidate' for Maryland job

DJ-Durkin-Michigan-Maryland.jpg

D.J. Durkin coached Florida to a bowl win after Muschamp's firing in 2014.

Maryland has reportedly reached out to a lot of candidates, but one name has emerged as a frontrunner as the school's next head football coach.

Both Yahoo! Sports' Pat Forde and Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman are reporting that Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin "has emerged as a strong candidate" for the Maryland job. According to Forde, Durkin "met recently with Maryland officials" and "the interview went well," but no offer was made.
