Maryland to debut new uni… with ‘Star Spangled Banner’ lyrics

Tuesday, Maryland announced that it had extended its apparel deal with Under Armour through the 2023-24 school year. As part of the announcement, the Terps also unveiled a new uniform it will wear for Saturday’s non-conference game against West Virginia.

The words on the helmet and the jersey? Yep, those would be the lyrics to the “Star Spangled Banner,” as the school’s press release explains.

This weekend, the Terrapin football team will take the field in a historically inspired uniform that pays homage to the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore at Fort McHenry and the Star Spangled Banner.

I thought that was a Shuriken for awhile.
I get doing this stuff if it's for charity or something... but wtf is with all the Plastic Patriotism? It's like all those used car dealers flying American Flags w/predatory loans for servicemembers; or all those Universities claiming how much they love Vets but just want those juicy MGIB / Ch33 payments.

Given the historical connection between the Star Spangled Banner and the State of Maryland, I think this is pretty cool. The Navy unis worn against the Buckeyes were similarly cool, for similar reasons.

Whatever else you care to say about the various recent Maryland uniform concoctions, most of them have at least been directly connected with the history and culture of the state. You sure can't say that about those for Oregon, Texas Tech or most of the other garish special-use uniforms that Nike, Adidas and UnderArmour have put out there.

Maryland refuses to shake hands with Penn State, does Penn State have "cooties"?

Maryland and Penn State really don't seem to like each other, mix it up before kickoff

Penn State and Maryland are longtime east coast rivals. Granted, it has always been a one-sided rivalry, with the Nittany Lions 35-1-1 all-time vs. the Terrapins.

Now they are conference rivals as the Terps have found their way into the Big Ten. Even though the teams have not having met on the field since 1993, it was exactly "Nice to see you!" and "How's the family?" before the game.

For their actions — inactions? — the Terps were rewarded with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

The Terrapins saw the biggest increase in average attendance among Big Ten schools, with a 13.8 percent jump from the 2013 season for all games, including two sellouts. In Big Ten home games, Maryland filled Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium to 91 percent capacity this season. Two of the Terrapins’ four Big Ten home games drew crowds of 50,000 or more patrons, after eclipsing 50,000 people in a conference home game just once over the previous four years. In addition, Maryland’s average attendance in Big Ten road games was more than 82,000, after facing an average attendance of just over 50,000 in conference action the season before.
