Maryland Terrapins (turtle)

Terps, first, I have no problem with you saying you want to play the Bucks. As a fan, you want your team to be the best (at least I hope you do), and to be the best, you have to play and beat the best. If this matchup had occured in 2001, it may have been a good game. But if the game occurs anytime after, especially this year, I think OSU wins without too much drama.

Second, the MD-Iowa comparison is not close, despite the comparable records. Iowa has been one of the best teams in the country over the past 3 years, while Maryland has been solid, but has not even won the ACC.

Finally, its not impossible for Maryland to become an elite team, at least for short times. Kansas State had one of the lowest winning percentages in football before the 90's. They may not compete year in and year out like other programs, but they will make some top 10 runs for a few years. And, as far as I know, Iowa has never been a consistant top-tier team, but they make their runs every few years also. However, if they can hold onto Ferentz that may change.

Next time you just may want to research more before you post.

We lost 3 games b/c our second string was not able to replace that many lost players right away...

our team improved steadily from the IU game on...

... and then barely lost to a pass happy Purdue team b/c 4 out of 5 of our starting DBs were out with injuries.

Another dipshit going on about a recent 10 win season during the two years that everyone played 14 and 13 games respectively. How original.

I don't know if this kid has gotten to a statistics class yet or if he's bright enough to understand it but I'll try and help; the Twerps record in 02-03 was a combined 21-6 and 2 of those wins came against non 1-A teams.Thats a .778 win % or in a 12 game season a 9-3 record, IF you got to play your 1-AA patsy every year. Forgive me for not being impressed but we fire coaches for too many 9-3 records around here.

No, your team had it's one shot at the big time and Florida gave us all 56 reminders of why you guys are anything but big time.

The Maryland Terrapins

Having grown up in the Baltimore area, I have always followed and like the Terps. They have had a few more ups than some people are willing to give them here......in the mid '50s they had some top 10 teams. In the mid to late '70s they had some very good teams.......they came within a Cotton Bowl loss to Houston of finishing #2 or possibly winning the NC in '77 or '78. In the early '80s they were better than Ohio State due to the outstanding QB play of Boomer Esiason and the excellent Coach Bobby Ross. But after that it was pretty disastrous for the Terps until Friedgen resurrected his alma mater in 2000.

The pre-UM/VT/BC ACC conference was #1 FSU and then a hord or decent teams like Maryland, Virginia, NC State, Georgia Tech, and either Clemson or UNC. Maryland's only shot at an ACC title was in 2001........and they got destroyed by Florida in their bowl game that year......not a good sign for a program trying to throw its head into the ring of contenders.

FB at Maryland isn't as big as BB is at Ohio State. So I'd say OSU is a moderately better BB school in the past 20 years than Maryland has been a FB school over that same timespan.

Could Maryland vs OSU be an interesting FB game in 2005? Sure, but only if you're interested in Maryland taking a beating. But so would any mid level ACC team....so don't take any offense by that. But Ohio State is loaded in 2005 and poised to challenge for the NC. After 2005, then perhaps the matchup would be a closer one.

By the way, I'd compare Maryland to the following BigTen teams:

the last 5 years: Wisconsin....up and down with one really good season
the last 3 years: Northwestern or Michigan State
the last 10 years: Purdue......1 really good season and a couple good ones
the last 20 years: Illinois......2 horrible seasons for every good one
the last 30 years: Michigan State....a couple brushes with Top 10
the last 50 years: Illinois.....not quite as good as Iowa
