High School Massillon Tigers

Massillon Head Football Coach Stacy's future in some doubt.

Tom Stacy’s two-hour discussion Monday night with the Massillon Board of Education about his future with the Tiger football program remains a private one. School board members continue to decline comment about what was discussed in the executive session.

Massillon City Schools Superintendent Fred Blosser did confirm that the board and Stacy discussed the future of the Tiger head coach, but Blosser declined to say what that future could be.
“I am not at liberty to say (what was discussed),” Blosser said Tuesday. “I will say that there was no action taken nor was there any action recommended.” Stacy said Monday that he did not tender his resignation at the meeting. The possibility of his resigning had been broached on Internet discussion sites. He has also denied rumors that he is seeking a job at the University of Findlay.

I mentioned in another thread that I took in the Y'town Cardinal Mooney/Coldwater game at Massillion PB Tiger Stadium. While I was there I couldn't help but notice that Massillion is putting up an 80,000 square foot
indoor field house. The indoor practice field is 100 yards long, not bad for a almost dead rust belt town.

Don't know if anyone else saw Sportscenter this morning, but they had a segment on marketing caskets, urns, and other burial items to sports fans so that they can be with their favorite team for all of eternity (it was both sad and disturbing, by the way). The piece began by examining the birth of the trend in Europe where fans of football (read: soccer) clubs were buying in. Then it moved to America, specifically with baseball teams. It also mentioned that the trend has extended all the way down to the high school football level at one Massillon Washington high school. Wow.

As the multimillion dollar indoor training facility glowed and sparkled on a moonlit night, the Massillon Tigers didn't try to be primetime. They didn't showboat. They didn't talk trash.

Under a new coach and with a new attitude, the Tigers tried a foreign concept.

Humility.

With plain white helmets - no stripes, no decals - Massillon went about its high school football season opener with a businesslike approach. It scored five touchdowns, and not once was there a massive celebration. But the Tigers' 45-29 win against Buchtel didn't come without its trouble.

By Todd Porter
Posted Jan 28, 2010 @ 05:56 PM

An exhaustive investigation into recruiting allegations that lasted more than six months has ended. Ohio High School Athletic Association Commissioner Dan Ross said he was relieved to learn the investigation turned up no ?credible evidence? of recruiting at Massillon?s Washington High School.

Sunday Special: A closer look at recruiting investigation
By Todd Porter

Now that the Ohio High School Athletic Association recruiting investigation has closed, there are a few important facts to remember about what happened during the last six-plus months.

No school district turned Massillon in. In fact, Massillon City Schools Superintendent Lisa Carmichael self-reported four transfers of Canton City Schools student-athletes to the OHSAA.

Carmichael first had her people do their own investigation. Then she asked OHSAA Commissioner Dan Ross for guidance and welcomed the OHSAA to further investigate. They did.

MASSILLON?S DREAM

These are crazy times in Massillon. Jeff David, the president of the Paul and Carol David Family Foundation, sent a letter to Massillon City Schools Superintendent Lisa Carmichael expressing disappointment with Carmichael?s lack of engagement in moving the DREAM project forward. Carmichael responded that she was committed to the education aspect of DREAM.

As a refresher, DREAM stands for Developing Resources for Education and Athletics in Massillon. When the project was announced in 2007, it was made clear then that academics and athletics were cornerstones to this project.

I?m not sure who pitted academics against athletics in Massillon, but since when can?t the two coexist? They do everywhere else.

Does the indoor training facility the David Foundation built as a part of DREAM attract students from other districts? Yes. No one hid from that fact, either. It was acknowledged at the first press conference, and it?s within OHSAA rules.

Before any superintendent comes to Massillon, he or she needs to understand the DREAM plan was there first. One either accepts the position in Massillon with eyes wide open or shouldn?t accept it at all.

Now, here?s hoping Carmichael and David meet soon to iron out the problems or the foundation may take the DREAM project to another school district.

Game Review | FridayNightOhio.com

The Massillon Tigers struggled to find any rhythm in their season opener against the Buchtel Griffins at Paul Brown Stadium on Thursday night. Buchtel's Ernie Calhoun returned the opening kick 90 yards to put Massillon on its heels early and the Griffins never let up. Buchtel committed heavily to its run game which produced 212 yards on 38 carries. Buchtel's defense produced seven turnovers, including six interceptions. Marlon Oden returned the last interception for a touchdown to seal the game with 3:06 remaining in the game.

Massillon shifts mindset as McKinley Week arrives

One of the RVs parked in the north lot adjacent to Paul Brown Tiger Stadium had the Christmas classic "Most Wonderful Time of the Year" playing for all to hear about 40 minutes or so after the Massillon Tigers had concluded their 55-17 win over Avon Grove (Pa.) last Friday night. It seemed fitting because, for most Tiger fans, the most wonderful time of the year had finally arrived.

McKinley Week.

There is a look Jason Hall gets in his eyes. It is the same look the Massillon head coach hopes his team plays with every week. Hall's mind ponders the question and his eyes pierce through you.

Is a token, a symbol such as the victory bell, important to the victors in the Massillon-McKinley game?

"Go into our weight room and look at the picture hanging at the top of the wall," Hall said.

There it is. About 50 feet above all the weights, machines, ropes and pulleys to build muscles is Massillon's motivation. It is a picture of the victory bell painted in McKinley's red and black and on display at McKinley High School.

Initial 'Game' always special for players involved - The Independent

MASSILLON, OH —

The refrain is almost always the same, regardless of which side of the rivalry they were on. Both Massillon Tigers and McKinley Bulldogs can agree on one thing, that there’s is nothing quite like the first time they step out onto the field to play in arguably the most storied rivalry in high school football.

"You're going to come into the game and you're going to have some butterflies and everything," Tiger fullback/linebacker Clayton Mattox said this week. "You're going to be emotional. After the first couple of plays, you just have to get it under control and know you just have to go out there and beat McKinley."

For more than a few players on both sides, Saturday afternoon’s 120th meeting at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium will mark their first chance to be a part of the rivalry. For the coaches, there is little they say to those new to The Game to get them ready for the experience.
