BUCKEYE COMMIT TYLER GREEN AND TEAMMATE ANTHONY MCFARLAND SHINE IN PHILADELPHIA

On Friday night, I attended a high school football game in Philadelphia to see 2015 Buckeye commit Tyler Green and 2017 target Anthony McFarland.

Green, McFarland and their DeMatha Catholic (Md.) teammates travelled up I-95 to play La Salle (Pa.) in the "Brothers Forever Classic." The game's name comes from two former players, one from each school, who became best friends at the U.S. Naval Academy. They went through battle together and each was killed in the line of duty. Today, they are buried next to each other in Arlington Cemetery, with this game serving as a reminder of their friendship.

Although DeMatha ultimately lost the game 41-39, they made a strong comeback, scoring the last 19 points of the game. Green and McFarland played major roles in the comeback.

Tyler Green, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound safety, has a reputation that precedes him. Green spent most of the game at nickelback, and La Salle avoided throwing at his side of the field. He recovered an onside kick, and his positive attitude buoyed the team even when they were down by three scores.

I also went to the game to see Anthony McFarland, a 2017 running back prospect and Ohio State target. McFarland might have been even more impressive; he blazed past La Salle's defense for 300 yards and three touchdowns, essentially being the only reason DeMatha's offense was in the game before the comeback.

During the game, I was able to chat with Green's mother for a good two hours about everything under the sun. The conversation drifted to why Tyler committed to Ohio State and the answer was simple: Urban Meyer.

4-Star All-Purpose Back Anthony McFarland Narrows List, Includes Buckeyes

Anthony McFarland, a 2017 4-star running back out of DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Maryland, released his Top 10 on Tuesday and the Buckeyes found themselves listed with nine other teams.

McFarland (5-8 186) is now down to Alabama, Miami, Maryland, Ohio State, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, South Carolina, Notre Dame and Texas A&M. He is rated the No. 4 all-purpose back in the nation per the 247Sports Composite.

The Buckeyes currently have one running back committed in Texas prospect J.K. Dobbins, who is listed as the No. 3 all-purpose back in the 2017 class.

Like Moore, McFarland had a huge game against Ohio State’s much-maligned defense last year – running for 298 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries as Maryland pushed Ohio State to overtime in a near-upset – and he also received a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes when he was in high school.

A teammate of Ohio State defensive end Chase Young at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, McFarland received an offer from the Buckeyes in 2014, when he was just a sophomore and ranked as one of the top overall prospects in his class.

Ohio State didn’t end up pursuing McFarland aggressively, however, as J.K. Dobbins ultimately emerged as the Buckeyes’ top running back target for the class of 2017.

“They did for a little bit, for a while, my sophomore year,” McFarland said when asked how much Ohio State recruited him. “Then I think they just stopped. I think they just really stopped recruiting me.”

Even if Ohio State had made a stronger push for McFarland, it might not have ultimately made a difference, as he chose to stay in his home state and play for Maryland – after also strongly considering Miami – in order to be close to his family.

“My family always said, they don’t care where I go, they wanted what was best for me, but they always kept it real with me and said they’re not going to be able to come to a lot of games,” McFarland said. “And what kid wants to be somewhere and you see everybody else with their parents and you’re not with your parents? I’m a family person, so that’s the reason why I stayed home the most.”

McFarland said Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford expressed regret for not making a bigger effort to recruit him, however, after his big game against the Buckeyes in November.

“He came to me, put his arms around me and said, ‘I don’t know how we didn’t recruit you more.’ And I was just like, ‘Well, I’m here now, no point in you saying that,’” McFarland recalled. “But it’s all good. I got much love and respect for Ohio State, and the way they do things, the way they win, their tradition.”
