Looks like it will be very solid. Dice is doing the multiplayer (battlefield series) and looking at some of the trailers and reading reviews, I think it will be the best FPS released this season. (compared to COD: Black Ops and BC2 and especially Reach haha)

This game also has broken pre-sell records for the franchise. Much of that could be that MOH has always been a WWII themed 'chise and just like the COD series, taking the game into the 21st century has garnered a ton of excitement.

MOH also gained a little extra attention because it was actually calling the terrorists "Taliban" and the country was called Afghanistan. Military Exchanges decided that they would not sell a game that allowed users to be Taliban forces fighting and killing Americans in multiplayer. EA this past weekend changed the word "Taliban" to "Opposing Force" to mitigate the complaints coming from the Exchanges and some smattering of veterans who thought it is in poor taste to use the Taliban and Afghanistan setting. As a disabled veteran myself, I seriously think that these complaints are a result of some people who may be a bit over sensitive. Calling this game out, but not any of the other FPS shooters with an american vs terrorist theme set in random Desert/mountainous Hole of a country is a double standard. Just because it actually calls the country Afghanistan and the Terrorists the Taliban doesn't make this game any worse than any other in the genre. Other games use Nazi's, Vietnamese, Russians etc for the games and no one is going crazy. Don't even get me started about how all these complaints ignore movies like Blackhawk Down, The Hurt Locker, Jarhead, etc...

One week to go... I am ready to go hunt "Opposing Forces"

Picked this up today from blockbuster. I have only played it briefly, but it absolutely obliterates any FPS on the market in terms of campaign gameplay (haven't tried multiplayer yet).

The realism, audio, animations and visuals are simply stunning. You start out in a foreign war-torn town, fighting in urban combat with tricky lighting and visibility. The night vision only works in the dark, even mild light is pretty blinding.

If the gameplay is anything like the campaign, this will be the game of the year.

Beat the singleplayer. Really enjoyed the realism (albeit with an arcade style health system), gun design, variety of settings and warfare.

The story was weak, particularly the conflict between top level bureaucrat and the military general.

I think this was a really good starting point but needs a big upgrade for the next game. They did a very nice job setting up the firing lanes, teamwork & realistic battles, but the AI & implementation didn't pull it off. The "shooting gallery" criticisms were on point.

I wouldn't recommend buying it, but renting it for a week or two.

How's the multiplayer?

I am speaking as a disabled OIF/OEF veteran and I LOVE this game.

Some of the reviews were rough, especially IGN. Most of the complaints were completely subjective. "Too many acronyms" ? really? It is supposed to look and sound authentic. Go hang out with some military guys for awhile and tell me if they use acronyms. I didn't even notice them until I played again after reading it. Yep, lots of acronyms... Yep, authentic.

While the General to beaurocrat story part was kinda sketchy, BUT I also know that in the SF community, many times you have an SF commander talking to a suit. The lack of any rank insignia or name tapes is because in the SF community, they want to be sterile ie. nothing to ID who exactly you are.

I will also say that even thought the single player campaign was short, making it longer would have degraded the story, which of any game I have played, stirred more emotions and memories of my time over there than any I have played so far. Also, the countryside and the scenery was VERY reminiscent of how it actually looks there. WELL DONE

The multiplayer is fun, IMO better than COD in many aspects... Hope for more some more maps on DLC.

I would give this game a 9.3. The only knocks were the general to suit story line, limited maps for the harcore mode on MP, and maybe some jaggies in the MP that caught my eye.

I was wondering what your thoughts were given your experience. The teamwork, support and courage was really showcased well in this game.

The more realistic gunfire, animations, audio are obvious observations, but I loved their attention to detail in the varying types of visibility....

Whether it was the difficulty of seeing through blowing sand, being blinded by your night vision unless it was very dark, the oval lens distortion on a sniper scope, trying to see through the haze across the valley and scan an entire mountainside for snipers, struggling to see in the haze of your wounded state, etc.

Holding out at the hut with hundreds of tangos closing in on you with your cover disintegrating was a particularly great scene.

I really like it. It carves out a nice, unique nitch separate from battlefield & COD imo. It feels like America's Army & Call of Duty combined, in a good way. The realism of the weapons, gunfire, firing lanes, rapid death when caught in the line of fire, etc.

They do need more maps, but at least this early they seem to be pretty balanced and make you work as a team and keep moving. Sitting still for too long will eventually get you killed.

There are some instances where the graphics stutter a little, though sometimes it is tough to differentiate between that and bullets hitting your character.

There are unlockable perks (which I hate) but they don't seem to be as domimant as in M.W. I'm hoping there aren't heartbeat detectors coming eventually, because right now all I've seen are radar (which is spotty), mortar & missile strike perks.

This review nailed it imo

At first glance, it's easy to dismiss MOH as the cheap Type 56 Chinese rip off to COD's immensely popular Kalashnikov AK-47. The weapons selection feels like a small cupboard... skill and unlock system pales in comparison ... etc ...

...And then you fire your first weapon, and all your concerns are blown away like a .50 calibre round hitting a watermelon.

Dice has totally and utterly nailed the feel of shooting in MOH. Each weapon is imbued with the soul of a howitzer cannon, with booming sound effects that will reverberate into tomorrow. It's all thanks to Dice's wonderful High Dynamic Range Audio, but it's a step up even from Bad Company 2. There might not be that many weapons to choose from, but they're all absolutely magnificent to listen too, and when the whole battlefield opens up at once, it's like a chorus of angry angels.

It's not just the way they sound though; it's also the utter destruction they do to the environment. The Frostbite engine once again delivers destruction, though it's been heavily toned back from Bad Company 2. While houses and buildings might not crumble as if they're constructed from balsa wood, every shot you fire will probably break something - be it the many pots and pans, windows, fences and more that litter the landscape. If it doesn't break anything you'll still be rewarded with dirty big gobs of dust. The result of this audio/visual feedback are arguably the most visceral, satisfying guns we've yet fired in a shooter. After playing a few rounds of MOH we jumped back into COD: MW2's virtual battleground to compare the gun effects. Our favourite boomsticks suddenly felt like plastic cap guns, with CODs weapons lacking the level of oomph that MOH does so easily.
While the mechanics of MOH are absolutely rock solid, outdoing even the mighty COD, we're a little concerned about the lack of content. It won't take long for serious gamers to blaze through the shallow ranking system, and eight maps is about five too few. However, if Dice can deliver a regular stream of timely DLC we'll be returning to this game time and time again; without it there is little doubt that MOH's initial artillery boom will soon become a whimper.

Played some good multiplayer last night with JWins.. I am still enjoying this game. Where I feel this really differs from other games is how support by fire and suppressive fire along with the use of smoke allow you to locate, close with, and destroy your enemy and your objectives. The use of aggression en force truly creates momentum and can turn the tide of the game.

Ended up exchanging it at blockbuster for star wars the force unleashed II. Played about 20 hours online.

I loved the realism, teamwork, aggression that gomer hit on above. The intermittent radar is also nice. It gives you a feel for their surroundings without letting guys cheat around corners. The use of smoke is outstanding, I wonder if it is even better on pc since smoke is one of the hardest things to process graphically.

The air strikes ended up wearing me out. One guy literally wiped out 20 guys in 3 airstrikes, singlehandedly reversing a game where my team dominated. He would wipe out the support around the base, let his team get inside and us respawn, then wipe us all out again.

He went 40/3. The next two games in a more close quartered and vulnerable airport? A combined 8/29.

It also does not have the variety to keep your interest. Not just the limited maps, but I miss battlefields footers, aerial drops, tanks, vehicles, mounted guns. This is raw combat and aside from the air strikes it is outstanding, but I don't think it has as much long term value.

I am really looking forward to the next one, as well as how this raises the bar for the other two.
