Detroit Cass Tech's Terry Richardson impresses SEC teams

BY JOSH HELMHOLDT

When Detroit Cass Tech cornerback Delonte Hollowell signs his letter of intent with Michigan in next February, as expected, the Technicians will have sent a cornerback prospect to a BCS-conference program for four straight years.

That streak almost assuredly will extend to five in the 2012. Junior Terry Richardson is expected to start opposite Hollowell this fall for Cass Tech. Richardson has solidified his reputation as one of the state?s best prospects for 2012 through a series of camps and combines.

The 5-foot-9, 160-pound Richardson gained attention this past winter and spring with several impressive combine performances, including a February outing at the Michigan Football Showcase where he was one of just two defensive backs who looked capable of playing on the same field with Rivals100 wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett of Saginaw.

Richardson?s stock drastically rose last week when he traveled for camps at at LSU and Alabama. He walked away from those events with offers from the Tigers and Crimson Tide following impressive performances.

?I competed with some of the best in the south and showed I can compete,? Richardson said. ?I showed my coverage skills and my technique and I came away with an offer from both schools.?

Moore then found Terry Richardson in the end zone for a 35-yard score on a third-and-12 with 1:32 remaining. Richardson set up the drive when he intercepted a Davaun Williams pass and returned it to King's 47.

"I noticed Terry Richardson had him beat and threw it up there for him," Moore said. "Terry was telling me all day he could beat him so I gave him a shot.

Detroit Cass Tech has long been a haven for some of the state's most talented football players, and this year is certainly no exception.

Head coach Thomas Wilcher has his normal band of speedy athletes, but this year they've sprinted further than usual. The Technicians (12-0) will face Lake Orion (11-1) in the state semifinals Saturday afternoon. One of the thoroughbreds leading the way for Cass Tech will be junior cornerback Terry Richardson.

While he'll never be confused with the biggest player on the football field, Richardson plays with a swagger that belies his size. That trait has been on constant display this season thanks to an excessive resulting from being the other corner on the team featuring Michigan commitment Delonte Hollowell.

"Delonte really doesn't have too many stats this year because teams always come my way," Richardson explained. "Me personally, I like the challenge. I like to continue to get tested to see where I stand. I'm just loving it."

Confident words to be sure, but Richardson has backed that talk up with his play. To date he has notched 30 tackles, eight interceptions, and even managed to chip in on offense with 300 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

"He's a natural at corner," said Scout.com Midwest regional manager Allen Trieu. "He has tremendous instincts to go along with the quickness and hips to turn and run with receivers. He also has great ball skills. His main weakness is size. I'd like to see him add weight this offseason but his tackling this season has been solid despite that.
