"Please respect my decision." I do, but narrowing it down to TEN seems to fall a little short of a "decision".

Better than 20... It’s not an easy process. I think this time last year my kid was bouncing between schools in five states, three time zones and even considering not playing if he couldn’t find a program that had the academics and major he wanted. Since then, his choice of major changed (in my opinion for the better... doing data science + business) and ended up picking a program that wasn’t even on the radar last year.

I don’t blame any of these kids for taking their time when they have the opportunity to do so.

I know, and I don't blame them either. And the sad fact is that there are probably fans of some school left off of his list of ten who won't respect his decision to not include that school, which is why he asks for the respect. It just struck me as funny tonight for some reason.

Well, it does seem funny to me too. “Here’s my list of obvious top-ten!” My fav is when the kids say, “here’s my top 10 respect my decision... but my recruitment is still open...”

Payne (6-4 297) is the No. 5 defensive tackle in the 2021 class per the 247Sports Composite. He is the No. 31 player overall and the No. 1 player in the state of Michigan. He is currently a 4-star prospect, but if he remains near the Top 30, he would be in line for a fifth star. Payne is the No. 25 player and the No. 4 defensive tackle in 247Sports’ own rankings.

Payne has already visited Ohio State a number of times, including last April and last October for the Wisconsin game.

Even though he has measured in at 6-3.5 and 297 pounds at a regional combine, he carries his weight well and is quick for his size. He plays both defensive end and defensive tackle for his Belleville High team, and also sees time on the offensive line where he is a talented puller.

Even though he projects as an interior defender, he looks like a quality pass rusher because of his burst and strength.

Here is the scouting report from 247Sports.

Big-framed kid, and has filled out a lot. Looks like a college-ready player despite how young he is. Naturally gifted athlete who moves around better than the vast majority of kids his size. Strong, powerful kid who can drive blockers back into the backfield. Is improving his technique. Has a good push-pull move and a solid rip, but is still adding more hand technique and other moves to his arsenal. He is also a very good offensive lineman and some schools may look at him on that side of the ball. Big enough to play nose, athletic enough to play a three-tech or maybe even an end in some schemes, he has a chance to be an early contributor at the high-major level if he keeps progressing at this rate.

Payne would be a welcome addition to an Ohio State class that just landed their first defensive tackle last week in Ohioan Michael Hall. Hall is the No. 19 defensive tackle in the nation. The Buckeyes also have a commitment from 5-star defensive end Jack Sawyer, who is currently ranked the No. 2 player in the entire 2021 class.

Wonder what the degree of mutual interest is since there were rumblings of OSU not having him as high as you’d think. Looks like a top-flight guy but the hell do I know. If we cooled off THAT much it’s hard to imagine we’d have made the 10

Not always true. Some kids may include OSU in their early top 10 to try to get the coveted offer from the likes of a Bama, Clemson or UGA that they don't have yet, even if they really have no intentions of going to OSU. it doesn't sound like there has been much recent communication between the 2 sides.

It's the old hats on the table trick, when they include 4 or 5 but you know that there are only 1 or 2 teams that realistically have a chance.

I get it though. Keep OSU in there. It does not look bad to have a school like OSU in your top 10 if he is still after more offers. When the big dogs come callin', the rest are usually right there sniffing around.

BELLEVILLE, MI
CLASS OF 2021
UNDECIDED

Top contenders: Ohio State, Michigan, LSU, Penn State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arizona State, USC, Kentucky, Oregon

Recruiting outlook: Payne is still a long way from a decision and his top 10 hasn’t changed since early February. A few programs were in line to get visits this spring and summer, but now everything is up in the air. Payne’s recruitment is fairly wide open but programs like Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, Michigan, and a few others are in good position right now. Don’t expect a commitment from Payne anytime soon.

Farrell’s take: I like the Buckeyes here even though Payne seems a long way from cutting his list or announcing a decision. Michigan will be in the mix for sure and it could come down to a Big Ten battle but, as of today, I have the Buckeyes.

-Can’t say I agree here
