McDowell uses camp as a learning tool

Defensive end Malik McDowell, of Detroit Loyola, is quickly emerging as one of the top 2014 prospects in the Midwest and wowed everybody at the camp with his 6-foot-5, 250-pound frame.

McDowell already holds offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State and Syracuse and recently added another big, national offer.

"Oregon recently offered me, and I'm also hearing from Notre Dame," he said. "I'm going to the Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State camps coming up, too."

McDowell seemed disappointed in himself after the event and felt that he could have performed much better than he did.

"I'm a little upset, but I'll do better at the next camp," he said. "I'll come back next time and not lose."

Malik says he does not have any favorites but will likely attend games at ND, Michigan, and Michigan State.

After seeing him in person, I can see why he is highly touted. He has an outstanding motor on play away, functional strength, decent burst off the line, also I would've like to see his hands be more active. Physically, he is very impressive, he was a legit 6-5 and looks like a lean 280, they lined him up from stand-up DE, to 1-tech. In the right university he could be a monster, of course they beat us pretty good...

Loyola lineman makes most of 6-7, 295-pound frame

Detroit -- Greg McDowell sees a bright future for his son, Malik. Most recruiting experts do, too. The difference is Greg McDowell's emphasis is on academics and his son's development as a person, not football.

"Football wasn't my intention when we decided (to attend Loyola)," Greg McDowell said. "My main thing was, he would get the attention he needed for his education. I didn't want him to have all the distractions (with) girls and such; being in a setting where he might think about girls, and not his education."

Greg McDowell can consider that area on track. His son has a 3.3 grade-point average at the all- boys school.

As for football ?

Malik, a junior lineman, is one of the top players in his class, and has received scholarship offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oregon, Stanford, Syracuse and Wisconsin. He's a nimble 6-foot-7 and 295 pounds ? and nine months short of his 17th birthday, still growing.

Still, Loyola has provided the best of both worlds for father and son.

"I am very proud of my son, dominating the way he does on the field; he's finding his way," Greg said. "He's becoming more engaging as a person."

Sounds like he has grown into more of an OL prospect if the reported weight is correct. You almost hope he doesn't grow too much taller as it almost becomes a liability at some point. Warriner does seem to prefer the very tall tackles though so he could be a great fit here.
