Miami is really a program that could only have risen during the 1980s. Yeah, they had some success in 2001-2003, but they were absolutely not anywhere close to the greatest team of all time during that period. They ran all over an extremely weak Big East.

Disagree with that last part. That team that won in 2001 was one of the best teams in CFB history. The amount of guys drafted in the first round alone was staggering. And a number of guys may be HOFers as well. Not to mention their backups were also drafted high. Now after OSU ended their "empire", then they haven't been the same since. But that 2000-2001 team can't be slept on.

They also rose during a period when many of the bluebloods were simultaneously going through down periods: Ohio State (Ol' 9-3), Alabama, Texas, ND (Faust!), USC were all mediocre for most of the 80s. Michigan was good but still couldn't win a Rose Bowl with Bo. Really, only Nebraska, Okie and the pedsters were at the top of their game, and the latter could arguably be viewed as an arriviste similar to Miami.

I don't think they really played anyone. Their best opponent was a Nebraska team that gave up 60+ points to Colorado, and their second best opponent was Syracuse. Yeah, they had talent. That doesn't make them the best team of all time.
